Porsche Crest 84 Carrera Chatter and Grind.

I just bought a 1984 silver carrera. It has 77k orig miles. one problem is that the clutch pedal doesn't return the last 2 inches and grinds occasionally at a stop shifting into first or reverse. At every take off; I get a chatter until the clutch is completly disengaged. After that, it shifts fine with no chatter. I'm hoping it just needs motor mounts with a clutch cable adjustment. The car has been well taken care of over the years with most, if not all of the service records along with it. I haven't gone as far as researching part #'s on some of the hard to read receipts but I've yet to find when or if the mounts were changed. Am I just fooling myself and really I need a new clutch kit??? Any thoughts????

Sounds like the clutch is gone. Be sure to post pics of your car.

Dave,
That hurts. I was hoping for something more positive. The clutch never slips and it has a lot of play. Do you get chatter from worn motor mounts too?

I did just replace my 22 year old mounts (x4), But I replaced the clutch at the same time. At 77K is this the orig clutch or has it been replaced? The clutch that was replaced chattered at times, but only slipped on the last day of its life!

I did it myself and did a bunch of other stuff while the engine/tranny was out. About 1K if you do it yourself.

My clutch had the same symptoms yours is now displaying. It's in the shop right now getting a new clutch, seal, cable, helper spring. Total cost is about $1800-$2000. Ouch!

i have a chatter too... but might be different.

88 with G50 tranny

1st and 3rd mostly...only at LOW rpms 800 - 1200 when clutch is fully engaged, it chatters...

If i slow the car down and not touch clutch..take it to 600+ rpm ...it chatters...same with 3rd gear, if i am in traffic and short shift 3rd...chatter....

Just noise, but I dont know what is causing it.

I'd say your clutch is the issue as well. I had chatter issues with my 87 and new clutch solved the problem. The $1800-2000 price (shop) is correct. My was in that range.

Chatter is fine with the G50 comming out of first.
But as a warning driving your car in 3rd and rpms at 600 is not good at all.
That is putting alot of stress on the clutch parts.

Check the technical articles page for adjusting the clutch. Go through the procedures and see if it works any better before considering the clutch is bad.

Do the easy stuff first.

I would adjust the clutch cable and shift coupler. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will solve your problem. However, I'd say your clutch is ready for renewal.

Hey Mattcamp,

Although bad motor mounts would not help the issue; Clutch chatter is typically caused by hard spots on the pressure plate and/or flywheel surface. The hard spots are caused by excessive heat and sometimes by poor manufacturing. The hardened surface area wears slower than the softer surrounding areas. You end up with patches of high spots that cause the chatter as the friction material is pinched more tightly under them. This same thing happens to brake discs.

If there is enough material on the flywheel, it can be turned down (i.e. remove hard surface material). The key is to go deep enough to remove ALL of the hard spot and not just the high spot, or it will return prematurely as the surface wears. Sometimes the flywheel does not have enough material to do this. I fear some folks think you just need to remove the high spots and your done.

An experienced operator can tell just by the sound of the lathe as it's turning the material. Ever hang out a brake shop and hear them turning rotors? The sound will change as the lathe passes over the hard spot. When the sound is the same all the way around the surface, your good.

Hope this helps!

"clutch pedal doesn't return the last 2 inches"

BTW: Check the helper spring (horse shoe looking spring where the clutch cable connects to the trans.).

Hey Mark,
I'll buy the thai food and jagermeister. You buy the Rockstar. I'm not sure now about the chatter. If I give it a ton of throttle and let out the clutch at a higher rpm; I get almost no chatter. Maybe I was trying to baby it too much. Porsches want to be driven. I'm going to try the clutch cable adjustment and check the helper spring first then we can pull the motor if that doesn't work. Until then, you're buying.

Hey Barndoor Mark, You forgot to list your Westfalia "67 t2 60something k orig miles/paint ect....Anyone want a original show bus with original safaris/gasheater/steering lock/interior in "Oh my God" shape? If you don't answer you phone tonight, I'm drinking all the Jager. By the way, clutch was fixed with an adjustment to bolt w/ the jam nut in between the helper spring and the pivot. Still has the same chatter but the clutch springs all the way back and feels a lot better. 2500 rpm's and 1st gear clutch let out is smooth. 77,787 miles not bad on an O.G. clutch.
