value of a 1979 SC
 

Does anyone know what the value of a 1979 SC with new interior,new paint,and just rebuilt engine. the car has 54 thousand miles on it.

Why would an SC with only 54,000 miles already have new paint and interior and a rebuilt engine?

Mine 1978 911 SC 3.0 had only 81,000 on it and it needed the same done to it. The previous owner purchased it new in 78, ran it until about four years ago where it sat for two because he was in prison. The car was left to the elements and the interior dried out and cracked, the top had tiny holes in it, the engine was seized up, and the clear coat on the paint was coming off, otherwise the car was in great condition.

I have seen price ranges from $8,000.00 for one in decent condition to about $14,000.00 for one that was really well taken care of and original (no new paint, etc.).

However, like anything else, it should be thoroughly checked out. Take a look at some of the web sites that have porsche vehicles for sale and that should give you a pretty good idea what they are worth.

I just purchased a 81 911SC with 170000 miles! I had the car rebuilt (this includes interior, wheels, tires, C2 body work, RS wing, repaint to original color, clutch kit, compleat engine rebuild, flywheel, etc). I am into the car $23000! I have seen examples that are very close to mine that have sold for $16 - $21000. Just make sure that you have any car checked out and you have a detailed list made of the things you must do to the car to get it to 100%. Make sure to factor in a compleat rebuild on the engine if it has not been done already, because even with a low mile car, you must consider the age of the car. The 3.0L engines are "bullit proof", but they all deteriate with time.

In the most recent issue of Excellence they suggest that a 79'SC is worth from $9773 in poor condition to $14875 in exellent condition. If you've never bought a Porsche before I think it would be a good idea to have someone who really knows them to check it out. Not all rebuilds are the same. Likewise, not all paint jobs are the same. They can vary in value by couple thousand dollars. There is also the possibility of previous collision repair that was done unproperly.

A lot depends on what part of the country you live in. I have found the Excellence prices WAY off for my local. Porsches are scarce here and go for more than is quoted. Excellence takes away value for fresh paint and other upgrades. I dissagree with this. If the paint is top notch then the car has MORE value. This goes for other upgrades as well. Bottom line - what's it worth TO YOU.

I can't emphasize enough that you must have the car checked out first. I don't care how it sounds or how it looks. My 84 (pictured here in a post) had impeccable interior, and what you see is the original paint.
It sounded okay to me, but that's because I didn't know how one should sound.

The problem with mine was, it sat for a long time for some strange reason. 1000 miles in 3 years. This killed the A/C, the injectors (3 of which had to be replaced) and other things. I wound up having the tranny rebuilt for 2700$


Miles mean nothing without an inspect. It's just too damned easy to remove a Porsche Odometer and roll it back. I mean, you just pull them out. I put the "white" faces on my gauges, and was amazed by the ease of getting inside those things(also was amazed at the east of screwing up the needles which had to be readjusted later!)

After it's checked out, remember, you're going to pay 6k to have someone rebuild it. And if the engine is worn out, you can be darn sure so is everything else.

I have a 79 SC with 148k miles on it that I bought from a friend for $5k! It was a daily driver and she had everything done that the mechanic told her to do (receipts since 1983). She "gave" it to me because she has breast cancer and wanted it to have a good home. The point is, it was in good shape except for the leather and the paint. I am prepping it for a complete paint in a different color and have found rust holes in the strangest places. It is nothing that cannot be repaired but I was blinded by the emotional response of buying my first Porsche. I still would have purchased the car and I will never sell it, but I should have looked closer. I am affraid to look in the engine...
