thinking about making my own rs doors but...

don't know how the interior door release mechanisms work. i've only seen them in the back of excellence. i have become quite good at upholstery work and would want the door to match current vinyl work that i've completed.they look simple enough to construct and would be inexpensive to make. i am refering to the ads from original interiors without the single leather strap.

I am in the process of converting to RS door panels. I ordered the parts from Original Fit (see my warning post from a few days ago!!). The parts were decent, but not intuitive to install. You must replace the spring loaded latches with straps for opening. They come with a sprung cable that attaches to your door sheet metal with screws. Mine work pretty well, but they are new.

Let me know if you want more detail.

Bob,
I'm not sure which RS panels you want to reproduce, But the inner mechanism is quite simple.
On the '73 RS, you take the whole rod mechanism out and you just have to screw the leather strap on the latch mechanism itself. You may have to bend the part on which the strap goes but it's no big deal
On the '92 odel, you take off the LAST rod, the one that is attached to the platic inner handle, and you just screw the pullstrap in its place.
I did the '73 routine on my '76 Carrera, it works beatifully.

hey john, this sounds like something i'm going to need to see in person. i have run into the R gruppe a couple times at Easy here in the e bay area. maybe i'll see an example next time. can you actually just order the black plastic door handle and latch mechanism from original fit interiors? and what was your experience with them? it sounds negative and i try to avoid mail order as much as possible.

Bob,

I'm not sure if you can get the black plastic handles from OFI. I went with the '93 RS America panels that have regular or electric window fixtures, but use a nylon strap for opening the door latch. Lightweight and simple, and pretty easy to install. OFI provides a cable and hooks to replace your existing hardware, but the plastic clips were missing from my order and I still have not received them (4 months now).

Other members on this board have had excellent response from OFI, but my experience has been terrible. They guy who works the phones and fulfills orders is a complete idiot. He has no knowledge about their products, and lied to me on at least 3 occasions about whether my order had been shipped. Finally I threatened BBB action and he shipped (minus the plastic parts mentioned above). At this point, I have written them off because everytime I call him, he says "I think I shipped those".

Bottom line: Their parts were nice... I also ordered carpet from them. Service, that one moron in particular, is horrendous!
