MSD6AL on Carrera 3.2 engine ???
Hi guy's
Does anyone bolt MSD6AL on a Carrera 3.2 engine with Motronic ??? Thank's for your answers ;-)) |
This is not generally done, as the correct ignition energy is produced by the Motronic system which fires the coil directly.
The MSD 6AL is better suited to earlier carbureted or MFI cars where its multiple sparks below 3000 rpm are effective at keeping the plugs clear. The superior mixture control of the Motronic system obviates the need for such a system with the 3,2 Carrera. |
That why I ask this question. But multiple sparks system could be usefull for a 3.2 engine, under 3000 trs/mn, when it's not really powerfull. I buy a MSD6AL to bolt on my 3.2 engine with a hot wire.
But if nobody tried it before me, It's gonna be interesting !!! |
I doubt you'll really see any improvement over the stock system.
The Motronic system is highly effective. |
And what do you think about pluging one coils per cylinder ???

MSD easy install in 3.2 carrerra with motronic
I happened to have a MSD 6A left over from my 74s 2.7, which caught fire, so I re-powered with an USA 85 carrerra 3.2 with factory motronic and steve wong chip, only mod is cat bypass.
So to put this MSD issue to bed once and for all I thought I may as well try it. I have my doubts it will be benefitial as the motronic is a great system. But at least we will know if it works at all. 3.2 carrerra with motronic ecu. I just wired up the MDS 6a (6200) with a new MSD SS Blaster PN 8207 coil. It took about 5 mins to install temporarily and started immediatly. Here is the MSD wiring (very simple) large red- battery plus (to starter solunoid) large black- ground (to bolt on left cam cover with all the other brown earth wires) white - connect to old coil negative (orig small green wire) red (switched battery plus) - connect to old coil positive (orig larger black wire) orange & black to the MSD coil (orange to positive, and black to negative) You dont need a 6AL because the motronic controls the rev limit (in my case steve wongs chip set to 7000) You dont need the MSD 6A tach wire (as the motronic feeds the tach) You dont need the MSD 6A trigger wires (violet and green) because the 3.2 uses flywheel trigger that feeds the motronic cpu directly. Ok I mounted the MSD 6A and MSD SS blaster coil and took the car for a test run, I noticed the following: Improved starting, better return to idle (previously had a hunting issue) now it just drops to about 700 for a milisecond before idling smoothly at 900) Much better throttle response under 3000 above 3000 - to 6700 it feels a little stronger, but not a significant change. However it does feel "snappier". For the record I'm running platinum + 4 plugs with clewett engineering leads. Next time Im at the drag track, I'll run a few times with the stock motronic and with MSD as a comparison to see if its really better. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166241598.jpg |
bcaway,
Pulling up a very, very old thread. I just wondered if you ever saw anything different at the track or later to show any improvement, or lack of improvement running the MSD? |
has anyone else done this ???
other threads suggest that the MSD will fry the Motronic - true or false?? |

I ran a MSD on my 3.2, no issues with the DME at all. Had it for 3+ years. I created a MSD Wiring Diagram for 3.2 Carreras and it appears the coloring for the wires is the same as the MSD brand unit.
I also had a Steve Wong chip and cat bypass. I saw better numbers when getting smog tested vs. stock, start-up was instant, power seemed consistent with marginal gains (if any). Of course, a dyno test before and after would be ideal. |
