Currently in Florida!
We arrived perfectly fine, the trip was nice (long). The car had no problems, didn't even burn any oil! I was actually surprised at the amount of kilometres I did with one tank of gas, I got 850 to 900 kms compared to 450 in the city back home!
I might go visit Europroducts in ST. Petersburgh to pick up a cat-by-pass pipe. O.K, talk to you guys later. Mike |

Great news! Bet you won't have any problems on the way back, either!
If you are interested in that sort of thing, a very worthwhile stop on your way back is the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Probably not too far off your path ... I went there last year for the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and had a great time! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

If you are interested in that sort of thing . . . .
There is a shuttle launch at the Kennedy Space Center on September 8 at 8:31 a.m. EDT. But even better, there is a night launch of the shuttle Discovery scheduled on Thursday, October 5th at 9:49 p.m. EDT. If you want to see the worlds biggest firework - this is it - 2 million pounds of rocket propellant and a half million gallons of liquid oxygen/hydrogen in the fuel tank. Last time we went to a night launch we went to Veterans Park in Titusville - it's on the waterfront behind the Burger King - you can't miss it. You're about 6 miles from the pad but you can see the launch clearly and hear it after 30 seconds. There were experienced launch watchers there with radios and TV's tuned to the NASA launch networks so you could hear the launch director, the crew and the official news channel. I think I'll plan on going - it'd make a great Porsche rendezvous. If there's general interest I'll dig up some more details. And don't forget to tune in to http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/missions/sts-92/mission-sts-92.html for updated information on this launch. Regards to all, Allan. I never wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer. I wanted to be an astronaut I loved the Smithsonian when I visited there more than 30 years ago.
A shuttle launch is thrilling for me, even on TV. I'd LOVE to see/hear thhe real thing. Talk about torque. Zero to 18,000 mph in 12 minutes. You do the math. I too am happy with my car's range. I can rely on 400 miles per tank, at least. ------------------ '83 SC |

Jim, you get 400 miles toi a tank?!
I refuel when the needle hits the 1/4 mark and that is usually around between 260 and 300 miles. Hmmmmmmm.... ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

My '70-911E with Webers gets about 17 mpg around town and 22 on the highway. I usually have to fill up about every 200 miles as the reserve light comes on after I've used 12 gallons.
If I remember correctly the space shuttle after take off, and after it has jetisoned the solid rocket boosters backs off to about 70% power until it leaves the earths atmosphere at which point they go to 110% power - and fuel consumption goes to one and a half tons of fuel each second! |

Leland,
Reread Mikes posting and he is getting 400 Kilometers to a tank in the city. I have a 3.2 DME car and I get 400 miles to a tank then usually have around 4 gallons left upon fillup. This is with mixed city and highway driving and half and half with AC turned on... JoeA |

Joe, I was refering to Supermans post where he said he gets 400 miles on a tank easy.
I don't even come close to that. What could cause such a drastic reduction in mileage? ![]() ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

400 miles per tank. Hah! I laugh at 400 miles per tank. I wish!!! A combination of my leadfootedness and mostly town driving with short freeway sections sees me getting about 300 miles to the tank. I assumed this was normal because the car has such a big engine and unsophisticated fuel injection.
I get closer to 400 miles when open road (cruising 50-80 mph through twisty roads). Am I sounding pretty normal here? Oh, tank is the larger one, 80 litres/20 gallons. I use about 19 gallons between fills. I guess that makes it 16mpg town and 21mpg touring (ouch!) Cam ------------------ Cameron Baudinet 1975 911S |

Good to know im not the only one, I get around 300-400 miles to a tank. Just depends how heavy ny right foot is.
If I drive at 100-120mph down the motorway I can watch the gauge going down. Given the cost of petrol in the UK at the moment, £0.87 litre or there abouts, my Porsche is becoming a very expensive way of life. ![]() ------------------ 911 2.7S Targa email:alex@cascade.f9.co.uk |

I'm going to fill up at lunch today (the car that is). I'll look at the odo (which I reset at each fill-up). I believe it is in the high 300s right now and the reserve light has not come on. I'll report. Seriously, over 400 miles.
The tank holds over 21 gallons, as I recall. And get this: I got 24.5 mpg on a recent trip BY GOING FASTER. The "pipe" on my car starts at about 3500 rpm. Above that engine speed, the car burns gas very efficiently (apparently). I had to go 85mph+ to get this 24.5 mpg, but I swear mileage is better above 3500 than below it. Finally, some if you will recall that I bought the car in October and fairly quickly replaced things like injectors (all six), so this car is probably operating optimally. Shouldn't they all? ------------------ '83 SC |

Leland,
Sorry about that. Your right foot and either carbs or older fuel injection is your problem. Not until the DME or a spot on setup with carbs or older FI will you get mileage like this on a 911. I get 22 to 24 mpg in town with some intown highway driving. Almost always over 400 miles on a tank. I have a "chipped" 3.2 with standard cat and exhaust but will be putting a "test pipe" on soon and see how this works. JA |

Uh....I have pushed the needle well into the "reserve" regions and gotten upwards of 470 miles off of one tank of premium. I then filled up with 19.5 gallons....for 24mpg performance.
This was after a long highway trip, but my normal operating procedure is to reset my trip odometer whenever I fill up, and to refill at 400 miles. I usually have a few gallons left. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 |

Allan B.,
Couldn't help but notice that you possibly live in Titusville?!? I used to live there some time ago when I was stationed at Cape Canaveral Air Station (Naval Ordnance Test Unit). Actually I lived all over the Space Coast during my many postings there, but Titusville was my favorite. I too love watching the shuttle go up at night....nothin' finer! FYI and even better site is the Banana Creek viewing area. If you can get into it you're only 4 miles from pads 39 A/B. I wathed several launches from that site, and believe me it makes your teeth rattle when it goes up! Would love to join you guys for the next launch, but it would be extremely difficult to drive from Hawaii to Florida in my little ol' 72 911T. Have fun folks! And...oh...BTW...gang...please say a prayer for our brothers trapped in the Russian sub. Take it from this bubblehead (submariner)...it is always in the back of our minds! Thanks! |

It's sad, but bound to happen.
The current state of the Russian military is sad. Their mainenance frequencies as well as quality are a wreck. They've got nuclear RVs (rentry vehicles or warheads) sitting outside in their shipping containers covered with snow. They also have a number of missle silos that have filled up with rain water (very bad). The only people guarding these "very bad" items are sparce, undertrained, underpaid, soldiers who would gladly sell these things to the highest bidder if they thought they could get away with it. It's scary really. ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

Tim - I live on the west coast in Sarasota so I don't know the east coast that well. Send me some directions on the Banana Creek viewing area and we'll make an exploratory trip - any excuse to go for a drive.
