Oil pressure light after oil change?

I had our shop mechanics change the oil in my 89 911 (they have never done it before, but are capable mechanics). They drained the engine and ds-tank, installed the filter purchase here, added 10.5 quarts (per the manual) of Castrol GTX 20W-50 and drove it a mile to my office.

When I started the 911 (as I was leaving the office), it "shook" for a few seconds on start (never had that on any prior 911), then acted normally.

I started to drive, the oil gauge was at the very top. About a mile into the drive the oil light came on (I've never had this happen on any of my 911's since 79), the light would only come-on while @ idle, above idle would go off.

I pulled over after a mile; no leaks, the oil gauge was pegged, the dipstick showed mid-way between the dots -- thus, all seemed OK.

I drove back to my office (a mile), the "druck pressure" was low, 1-2 @ 3,000 RPM's, but the light would not come on unless the engine dropped to idle; the mechanic that did the change was totally confused, I was confused as to what could have occurred. He added another quart of oil, confirmed no leaks under the 911, no leaks around the filter and the filter was tight. When we cranked it check the oil, again a "shudder" from the motor, cut it off, restarted all seemed OK -- still the oil light was on @ idle.

I left the 911 at the shop. He called an hour later and said he fixed it. That he loosened the filter, oil escaped, re-tightened it and the oil light went off, the "druck pressure" shot up.

Does any of this make sense?

Did I damage anything?

Now it appears to be a quart over filled w/11.5 quarts; but I recall it holds 12+ quarts, does this make sense?

Would appreciate any insight, thanks;

Elton

Well, it seems to be fixed; working normally. Since nobody jumped all over this, I assume it was a freak incident.

Sounds like an air lock somehow in the system. I don't really understand why or how, though.

I would very carefully inspect the drain and make sure there is not more than the typical "fuzz" around the plug when you remove it.

Fingers crossed for you,

Doug
