Smoking 964
Upon starting my 93-964 after sitting for over a week it blew a large puff of smoke. Scared the hell out of me. This is the first time it had ever done this. Oil consumption is not bad, about 1 qt every 2K. Car has never run better, even with 115K. Is this the
first sign of valve guides or piston rings ?? |

You may find that the smoke on start up particularly after a long period of time is related to leaking injectors. My car is in the shop at the moment with the injectors being replaced. It would often blow 'smoke' on start up after sitting for a few days and this was the reason given by the mechanic.

Bruce Anderson has fielded this same question many times in Excellence, and has always said it is nothing to worry about, if it only does it upon startup, and does not continue while warming up. I have to assume it has something to do with the exhaust valve guide seals ... and the fact that they are sitting 'under oil' when the engine is at rest.

Hey madster1, Don't get to worried about this smoke thing. My 91 has done it 2 or 3 times in the last 5 or so years. Yes, its scary, but it doesn't seem to be a precurser to anything going bad in the engine. I have never been able to pin point any specific cause for this.(perhaps a computer gilch or just a certain position the engine stopped in?) As long as it only does it very rarely and as a single event, I would not consider any "engine work" to remedy it.
