78 911 SC FUEL PUMP

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I CANT FIND THE FUEL PUMP WITH MY 2 GREAT BOOKS, 1 SAYS NOTHING THE OTHER SAYS IN FRONT NEAR THE TANK? REASON FOR THE PUMP CHANGE IS THE CAR STARTS HARD WHEN HOT, POSSIBLE CHECK VALVE LEAKING IN PUMP? DOES THIS PUMP HAVE A SEPARATE CHECK VALVE OR IS IT PART OF THE PUMP.
THANKS GARY

It cpould be your check valve. I dunno whether the check valve is independently replaceable.

There are other ways to loose fuel pressure, by the way, which does result in hard hot-starting. Leaking injectors. Leaking cold start valve. Also, many cars have a Fuel Accumulator which has a rubber pressure-bladder that can tear. This may have a screw/plug at one end. take out the plug and, if gasoline comes out, replace it.

Injectors can simply be observed. With the fuel pump running and the airflow sensor plat at rest, do they get wet on the end? Probably. By moving the sensor plate, you can also observe the spray pattern.

Definitely check the fuel accumulator up in the engine compartment on the driver's side. I went through this some years ago, checking pump, filter and everything else only to find it was this unit. If you can hear a faint clunk from it as the engine is turned off, it's collapsing...or use the trick in the above post. Do this before you head for the pump and check valve. good hunting.

If you do end up deciding that the check valve is the culprit most people just add another valve along the length of the fuel line as the one originally on the pump is internal as I understand it.

Excellent idea, Leland.

I'm not really sure whether the accumulator has a screw/plug, but now I at least know the cars have accumulators.

Definitely check out the accumulator. I'd also check out the injectors too. They are probably leaking, causing problems, and they also probably do not open/spray the way they should. New injectors are a smart idea in a car this age. They can be found for as little as $25 each.

If you feel that pressure is being released past the check valve, then if it's internal, do what Leland said and save money.

THANKS FOR THE HELP, WHAT I FOUND SO FAR, 1 THE PUMP THAT I TOOK OUT HAD A REMOVABLE CHECK VALVE IN IT, THE BOSCH NEW PUMP YOU COULD NOT REMOVE THE VALVE, 2 THE PUMP DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. WHEN HOT AND SITTING FOR 1 HR IT TAKES 1/2 MINUTES OF CRANKING TO START. HARD TO TELL IF ITS RICH OR LEAN WHEN IT STARTS. STARTS PERFECTLY WHEN COLD?
