factory workshop manuals

I recently purchased factory manuals volumes 3 thru 6, covering assembly groups 1 thru 9. In looking thru them I notice references to volumes 1 and 2. Do I need these as well? I have a '73 t . My wife reacted ' strongly ' when she heard what I paid for these. I don't relish explaining why I need to spend more but I do want the complete set for my car. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Don.

My volume 1 covers step by step rebuilding of the engine and suspension components, volume 2 covers the interior and electrical, how to remove parts and check circuts, etc. Mainly the first two volumes show you how to work on the car. I was under the impression that volumes 3-6 were parts, specs, and exploded diagrams. I suggest getting the remaining volumes. Telling your wife is your call.

I have all six volumes. Lucky me, came with my used 81SC. The previous owner did all his own work in Montana.

I would think for a 73 car volumes 3-6 wouldn't help you as much. My vol 3-6 has sections publlishe from 1973 and later. All the good stuff is in vol 1 and 2. Vol 3-6 are all supplements to 1 and 2, because the 911 evolved so if you want to see specific things on the 911SC you go there. So although alot of vol 3-6 is for the later cars, if you wanted the complete set for your 1973 car you would have to had vol 3-6.

Basically, how I use the books is this. If I want to learn about the front suspension, then I go to the front axle section in vol 1 or 2 and study it, then I go to the corresponding section in vol 3-6 and make sure nothing changed.

If I were you I would get vol 1 and 2. But did you get the Bentley too? It is better for DIY work. The porsche workshop manuals are written in a tone that assumes you know how to do all this. But the Bentley manual as well as Wayne's 2 books tell you how to do it from a DIY standpoint.

Hope this helps!
