Trunk cleanup Part 1: Gas tank paint color

Okay here's the deal I'm not looking to remove the tank, the overall finish is good texture-wise I just want to freshen up the look with a new top coat of paint. In my simple way of thinking I can mask off all I need and apply a few light coats to even out the overall color and the few minor chips in the finish.

The question I have is has anyone tried anything similar and if so any paint/color recommendations again I don't think I need to go down the Wurth stone guard path. I just don't want to have to try 5or 6 different colors to find the right one.

Here's where I'm starting from an '84:

My spare rim is being replaced with this and I want it to look good when it's done:

Thanks!

I would say that masking off the area around the tank, spraying a top coat on the tank might make it look better. i don't think it would be much extra effort to take the tank out and do a complete clean up. it's not to hard to do and the results would be better. i've hears that there is a wurth undercoating that replicates the texture - you don't need that however. the grey color i have also heard is a wurth color.

that's one nice spare tire wheel!

I've read up a little about removing the tank and will default to that if I'm not happy with the result. I don't want it to look marginal when done since I put so much time into refinishing the wheel. It was a mess when I started out.
