I would start with a basic ignition tune up including ignition wires and plugs.

Check some of my old posts...

After you do a basic tune up, and check the more obvious systems... My problem, although similar, was particularly frustrating as it was intermittant, and would also find itself at different rpm's.
Check the fuel injectors.... People forget that they just don't last forever... If they're original, you're going on 22 years of service now... I went through this for a year and a half before finally just replacing all six injectors... After which, the car ran like I just put a new engine in it!

I know a lot of people will chime in and say don't just start throwing money at it. Especially if parts are working... I would agree in part, however, is it really that wrong to replace items that came with the 22 year old car that are going to eventually fail soon enough??? I practice a little more proactive maintenance program on my vehicles...

Do a full tune-up if you haven't already.

Try and find any and ALL vacuum leaks. The intake runners tend to get sucked in...

Check and replace all CRACKED vacuum lines ( I still need to do this to mine).

I am not sure how to check the fuel-injector spray pattern as these come out as a set of three, if I recall...

Then get the CO checked and adjusted.

Good luck.

If your talking about your 84 Carrera; You may want to check these 2 things. If they don't correct the problem, at least it did not cost any $$.

The 3.2 has a micro switch toward the back side of the throttle body. It should just click when the throttle is closed, and just click right as the throttle is cracked open. When this switch stays on past idle, you get the symptoms you described.

How is your idle speed? Is it high or hunting up and down? If so; this link to Steve Wong's website shows how to adjust it. Once you click the link, just scroll down a bit.

Hope this helps

On drivers side head. Another way to find it: On the drivers side of the motor above the fuel rail, there are 3 connectors on a rail (or holder), top connector is white and bottom 2 connectors are black. Just follow white connector wire through the sheet metal down to the head.

Good Luck!
