3.6 911 engines
going to purchase a 3.6 engine to to bring hp up to around 300hp. The question is...what is the best to start with, a 993 or a 964? Why would one be better than the other?

As the owner of a 964 engine, I'd have to admit to being jealous of the Varioram engines (1996 and later).
Of course, they're also more expensive. ------------------ --------------- Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/Jalopy.html |

I can't help but ask, but 964 3.6 is rated at @242 hp and the 993 3.6 is rated at @272, the major difference that I'm aware of is the improved exhaust and the varioram intake, it would seem like no brainer, given that $ is not the problem to just use the 993 engine, drill the air box and install a chip (cyntex perhaps) and BAAM 300 horses(maybe)! I've been noodeling around with my 964 for years with chips and cat backs and K&N if I got a 10% improvement(questionable at best)I should be close to 270 hp. just my $.02....PS the varioram is really good at improving the low end torque, something the 964 is lacking.

Buy the cheap one and dump the intake system put on PMO's, crank fired ignition change the cams and make some real HP. After I wrote this I thought about maybe you live where there are smog cops and have to pass the test. I'll go back to sleep.
