Question top 5 upgrades for a 75 911 S targa

Just bought a 75 Targa and wanted to know what are some nice upgrades? Do a lot of you guys modify your 911's. I think the 75's aren't especially rare so improving them won't effect the value too much. Thanks

I'm pretty new to Porsche cars too, but I can unequivocally recommend to you this bulletin board and the threads that have been posted here. You just have to start looking and do the 'Search' option to find what you are looking for. These folks have been sharing knowledge with one another many years and you'll find admonitions run from colorful and bold to subdued wisdom. You car (if original) has the 2.7 engine and from what I am learning, many things should be 'upgraded' mechanically before you might begin with 'nice' upgrades.... whatever you may have meant. Search 2.7 upgrades.... lots of info out there, and chances are good that your car (if it has any miles under it and is still moving) has had all, or some of these done. Mine did not, as it was stored for 26 years with only 36K miles on it.... so nothing had been done. Fortunately, it had never been equipped with the "dreaded thermal reactors", which was akin to a small nuclear device strapped to the belly of the motor. Not really, but a very nasty emissions tool at best. Good luck. Kirk

Very slippery slope....take time to evaluate your needs and direction you want to go.
For most here we are into exercising our cars so performance is the issue , Some are into the museum thing.....
Form me weight is the biggest issue right now, there have been many chapters in my own personal saga.
One of the best things I added ti the car was a tower brace (2 pc)
the other best things were all the things I got rid of or replaced with a lighter component

- A good 3.0L never hurts.
- Turbo Tie rods good
- Don't do Webers unless you do the cams and exhaust
- Have heard good things about electronic upgrade to CIS
- But, I still love my CIS
- Shifting upgrades make you feel like you spent some money more than anything else
- Ditch the A/C
- 74' SS Hx are good
- Good tires, do a search
- Optima battery
- Jempro Fiberglass Hardtop modification is OK

Best thing, hands down, are Wayne's 101 projects and engine rebuild books.

Depending on the history of the car and it's maintenance:

The fundamentals:
1. Good tires, well balanced and alignment
2. New rubber brake hoses and brake fluid flush.
3. Fresh transmission fluid and clutch adjustment.
4. Check condition of ignition: timing, points, dwell, rotor, cap, wires and plugs.
5. Check mixture.
6. New shifter and shift coupler bushings.
7. Replace rubber suspension elements (and shock inserts if required.)
8. Corner balance followed by an alignment.
9. Rebuild pedal cluster (replace bushings).
10. 11 blade cooling fan.
11. Add an external oil cooler.
12. Remove thermal reactors and backdate exhaust to 1974 or earlier or equivalent (SSIs).

If you live in a hot place, the A/C can be upgraded to work reasonably well.

Do these FIRST if they haven't been done, especially the fan and thermal reactors.

Start with basic maintenance and getting familiar with the handling of the car. Did you get a PPI? If not, an inspection by a good P-car mechanic would be a good idea, and may leave you with a list of items that need attention.

The addition of external oil cooling (if you don't already have it) would be the place I would start. Parts for the cars are expensive, so it's a good idea to hook up with a local group of owners and check out what they have done.

Thanks for all the replies. The car does have the 11 blade fan. I will look into the cooler and thermal reactors.

Obviously repair anything that does not work...then for upgrades, in order:
Add SSIs
Add Carrera Oil Cooler and Fan
Install modern A/C components with barrier hose
Install Sport Seats
Install 11-blade fan
Install Optima Battery
Add 15x7 inch Fuchs wheels with wider tires
Add higher wattage headlamps and headlamp relays
Install smaller aftermarket steering wheel

+1 The above list is where to start. Once these are done, your only limitation is your checkbook.

Dump and Polish?

I understand the polish, what does "dump"
refer to?
