Rear seat straps and snaps.

I just finished re re doing the interior of my 71 911 T targa. The straps that hold the rear seats in the upright possition were not with the car two years ago when I purchased it. Does anyone know of a diagram or picture that would show this set up?

Thanks,
david w.

I just had some straps fabricated by Autos International (www.autosintl.com). They did not include the snaps, but I figure those are fabric store commodities.

Basically, the squared off ends screw to the seat backs, under the carpeting, and the snap ends snap to the rear deck. I am assuming you have the snaps in place there?

This is not a close up but kinda shows the concept:

A bigger (BIG) version is here:

I will post pics when I put mine together.

On a related note, what the heck are the two tie-down things in the middle of the rear deck shelf for, anyway?

Jack,
There are two more tie-downs on the vertical plane below the rear seats on my cars.
They are to fasten down the (heavy) things you put on the rear seats, to prevent them from doing interesting things with your head when you brake real hard. Ask me how...

The original 911 is, as far as I know, the only sports car where you at least get 3 big cardboard boxes in, plus a huge bag (or girl friend)on the passenger side, and 2 small suitcases in the trunk.
But make sure you strap all the things quite good in the passenger compartment going 140 mph! Use them!

Ask me how (like George...)

Thanks for the pics Chris C.
I also bought the straps from Auto's International, now I know where to put them.
Are they fastened to the seat backs with screws?
Thanks

Jack:

We also use the "two tie-down thingies" for the kids. We make them buckle up the rear seat belts, and put one each of the leather luggage straps (the proper name for those things) over their chests, sort of like the old-time motorcycle cops used to wear.

This way they have protection with lap belts and a sort of shoulder harness.

When it's just the wifie and I, we put our luggage on the folded-down rear seat (which has a lip at the front to prevent sliding forward), and strap the luggage down.

It's real retro, ne'est ce pas?...Andras

I made my own seat back straps from a piece of leather. As for the snaps, I'm a sailor, so I had some around. My recommendation, head down to your local boating store, BoatUS or West Marine for example, and get stainless steel snaps.

The metal "tie downs" on the rear deck and on the vertical plane beneath the rear seats are for the optional luggage straps. They are basically like long leather belts, with buckles to cinch down your cargo sitting on the "package shelf" (i.e. the folded-down rear seatbacks).

What do the luggage straps attach to at the bottom? I have the tie downs on the rear tray but nothing beneath the rear seats - is it (yet another ) long-lost item in my car?

Cam, the two lower tie-down buckles are the same as the two on the rear shelf. They are screwed on the vertical plane that constitutes the rear wall of the rear footwells. If you look under the carpet there, you will find the mounting plates welded with threaded holes. At least in my '73 RS and '76 Carrera 3.0 they are there and I use them from time to time.
Hope it helps, GeorgeK

Cameron:

Having followed all these postings, it has occurred to me that we all have been missing one thing about the luggage straps - namely that they were never "stock". They were an accessory, and NO car had them as delivered from the factory. So don't feel too bad about not having them. But they are available from your freindly local dealer (can't remember what I paid for them since I got them for my '74 and transferred them to the '83), but they are reasonable and quite versatile. As I posted above, they can double as shoulder harnesses for kids, in conjunction with the lap belts.

But their main value in in holding things in place as you negotiate the twisty in Alpine roads ;-);-).......Andras

Thanks for the help guys.

I will track them down in time. I am pretty sure I have the mounting plate referred to (why wouldn't I)?
