steering wheel wobble
The steering wheel on my 1978 911SC suddenly began to wobble last week. I have been reading a little about it and have determined that the bushing between the shaft and the housing immediately behind the wheel is toast. I purchased a new bearing/bushing combo at the dealer (ouch:eek
![]() Does anyone know how to remove the lock ring that holds this bearing/bushing in? It seems to be pressed in and I'm afraid I'll destroy it by attempting to remove it. The alternative seems to be taking out the entire final segment of the steering column and disassembling from behind (double ouch!). I already thought about replacing the ring but even the dealer doesn't have one. Thanks in advance for any help. ------------------ |

No, I don't, but I do recall a more detailed discussion of this procedure in an earlier thread. Perhaps the Search function can get it for you.

Thanks Superman!
I did the search and found a consensus of sorts. A steel sleeve from a 928 (part # 928.347.739.02) can be tapped into place without having to dismantle the whole assembly. I will re-visit the dealer tomorrow and attempt to get this. Thanks for your help! Dave Speights 78 911SC |

I've been there, done that. The play is usually not caused by a worn bearing but by the sleeve that holds the bearing in place. You can buy a plastic or metal sleeve that can be installed without dismantling the column, which is a p.i.t.a. You only need to remove the steering wheel. Pelican Parts carries the part as does Performance Parts. This should take care of the problem
