Why won't the Bosch H4 headlight fit/work in an '87?

Why won't the Bosch H4 conversion headlight work in an '87? Is there some additional rigging to do to make it work?

But it does fit. Only the lamp sockets & trim rings need to be changed.

And a relay kit is also a wise addition at the same time.

I already have the relay kit installed.
Doesn't a trim ring come with the H4 kit, either chome or black primed?
I know about changing the bulb socket, that's a no brainer. However aren't there some issues with how the H4 frame is secured that differs with how the exist mounting tabs are configured? Am I missing something here?

They all mount the same.

One thing: There isn't much room behind the bulb for a big off the shelf connector for the H4. Pelican has some amazingly compact connectors that are perfect for the job. Gove them a call.

My friend put H4s in his 87 and I put his H5s in my 73. The screw attachment was different but in the same location, it was very easy to make work in mine.

OK, but after viewing the procedure from this site I still don't see how the new H4 fixtures are secured. Do I leave the H5 frames in place? Do the H4's actually fit into the old H5 frames? The H4's don't seem to show the four mounting points as the H5 frame assembly. In fact I don't see any frame for the H4 fixtures. Still confused.

Once you have removed the H5, they fit the same bucket. They hook at the top & one screw at the bottom. That's it. They come with a chrome or black ring that is part of the H4 assembly. You can buy a finishing ring that mounts overtop. I didn't bother.

So let me see if I understand this. To put H4s in my '87 I just disconnet the H5s, plug in the H4s but I can't use the painted ring thats on my H5s? I have to go with chrome rings or paint the black rings the body color?

You got it. But when you're done you will have a decent set of headlights. The H5s are US mandated junk.

You would want to paint the rings but the H4s also have an available trim ring that covers up the integral trim ring on the actual headlight. This trim ring covers up the adjusting screws and looks very clean.

Yes, once you change the plug.

And the Bosch H4 comes with a 'city light' - an extra 4W bulb & socket mounted - which you can wire as a daytime running light also.
