Saw this photo on another site. What are the "horns" coming out of the transaxle for?

Forced cooling air for the transaxle ... originally for rear brake rotors, but modded at some point.

Wasn't it filled with oil?

Yes, but it also came frome the factory with a transaxle oil cooler mounted at the end of the extreme rear triangle ... which seems to have been cut off, along with the cooler! Probably the result of some expedient post-accident repairs.
