Question Fuel starvation and low tank capacity

My '72 was acting strange... like it was running out of gas. The gauge showed 1/4 tank. I drove a while longer and realized that I WAS running out of gas. I was surprised that I was only able to put a little over 10 gallons in (gauge showed 7/8 topped off).

Flash forward a few weeks later - same scenario. Gauge showed 1/4 tank, but engine cut out on left turn. This time it held 11.2 gallons. Gauge shows 7/8.

The gauge is probably from an '82 SC, but that still doesn't explain the low volume. Records show the tank was drained and screen cleaned 3 years ago.

Any ideas?

The same exact thing happened in my 72 and happens in my 73. I tried several solutions and finally decided to not let my tank go below 1/4. This was with completely refurbished tank and lines. You may want to pull the sender and shine a light in there just to verify.

was it coated when it was cleaned?
what does the filter look like?
how often is the filter changed?

did you measure the actual amt. of gas in the tank?
