Thoughts on oil and/or fuel additives?
I have a 1977 Targa 2.7. Odometer reads 46k, but I have no history of previous owners so cannot speak to the validity. It sat for a couple years, and I have brought it back to life over the last few months.
It seems to run fine, I changed the oil with 20W 50, but I'm wondering with the age of the car if I should use any oil additives. I only have 100 miles or so on the car since I got it running (with a lot of help from members of this forum) and changed oil. The oil still looks quite clean. Any thoughts on oil and/or fuel additives? I've read a lot on this forum and know many have strong opinions, so I expect this to be a lively topic. Thanks, Dave |

JMO,
I do not believe in oil additives. If you use a good quality oil you needent add to it. As for the fuel be carefull. Anykind of a cleaning additive you add may break stuff loose you don't want to disturb. IE the gas tank. If you want to add something to the fuel, I like BG 44K. Get ready to change the fuel filter. Congrats on the resurection.

The only good additive that I know of is Ventil Sauber (German for valve cleaner) which is a Lubro-Moly product. It was recommended to me for regular use by Steve Weiner of Rennsport System, who as you probably know is widely trusted by frequenters of this board and is my 100% go-to guy.
The basic way to use Ventil Sauber is to add a can of it as you refuel at some point reasonably soon before an oil change. Then drive that tank through the engine, including some good, hard, full-throttle, high-load operation and change the oil (which now has in suspension the carbon and other deposits you've cleaned off the valves). I believe that Techron is also well thought-of for the same purpose Any other overhaul-in-a-can stuff, whatever it is, is entirely shunned by knowledgeable engine people, as far as I know. Maybe there's an exception or two out there, but I've never heard any authoritative evidence in their favor.

You may need to boost your oil's levels of zinc and phosphorous with an additive to bring the these levels up to what was spec'd for your car's oil back when it was produced unless you go with a diesel motor oil, some better 20W-50, or racing oils. Last time I checked STP's oil additive (red bottle for 4 cylinder engines) was a good source for doing this.

been here for awhile and watched the scientific duke outs. The ans is NO in the P world ( for 911s ) Marvel mystery has its place for lots of things and the rest is usually snake oil. At 1st it looks good but upon real test it all goes to Shynoah in a hurry. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

There has been a lot of positives on the fuel additive called Techron for the injectors and fuel system. Do a search. Hope this helps.

Nothing
except.... Techron or V. Sauber in the gas once in a while & zinc (ZDDP was it?) in dino oil; or use synthetic oils. Search on those threads for some lengthy discussions and "clinical experience" by some shops that see a lot of cars.

I dump Techron in the tank and run it to almost empty before every oil change. This is recommended to clean the injectors. Some Pelicans use a product called Sea-Foam to clean engine deposits but I'm not really familiar with it. For winter storage I use Stabil in the tank plus some Marvel Mystery Oil to combat corrosion. Matching correct oil viscosity to temperature range will do more to protect your engine and prolong your oil-life than any additive, IMHO. I run Castrol 10W40 October to March and 20W50 April to September, or thereabouts.
Anything like Motor Honey, CD-2, Slick 50 or other 'miracle additives', will just add to the cost of maintenance with no real benefit. Regards,
