blown muffler sound?

on the way home from work the engine (1980 SC) suddenly went from a normal note to a very loud exhaust note. almost sounds like my muffler blew out.

it does not appear to be the muffler. the noise seems to come from the passenger side of the engine. it sounds like its not running on all six cyclinders but that may just be my imagination.

i looked under the engine but could not seen anything and i put a wet rag over the exhaust opening and could not hear any hissing. help, this sure does not sound good. any ideas?

thanks,
roger

i appreciate the ideas. hope it is just a blown gasket somewhere in the exhaust system. i will have to wait until tomorrow to explore the situation. it is late, raining, and my wife is watching TV in the living room next to the garage.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. It turned out that a spark plug had worked its way out. Apparently not an uncommon occurrence. A number of people have had problems with spark plugs backing out. Mine was cross threaded by PO, but yours may have not been torqued down enough. My car sounded exactly the way you describe yours.

When my 2.7L made that sound, it was the head studs that had finally failed. I hope this isn't what happened to your engine!

mystery of the blown muffler sound solved. i popped the lid and looked along the right cylinder bank and saw the plug wire to cylinder number five protruding out. hum.

the spark plug had backed completely out of the cylinder. like what had happened to snowtire and others on the forum! i guess when i changed plugs and set the valves a couple of months ago i failed to torque number five tight enough. hard to believe they can back out like that.

this time i used my torque wrench and checked the other plugs. set to 22 ft-lb per bentley. i really feel lucky to have such a easy fix. i was afraid the head studs had pulled out. now the porsche is back to making its normal motor music. thanks for your help.

It's nice to have something on your Porsche turn out to be LESS expensive than you thought!

Great news! I'm glad it wasn't the head studs...
