Elusive shift knob

A few years ago I saw an 84-89 Carrera in my town, Hudson, OH. It was dark silver (not sure which of the several silvers it was), with Big Reds, later-year 17" wheels & a license plate that read "FLAT 6" (or maybe "FLAT SIX"). It was in fantastic condition -- VERY nice, indeed.

I saw it parked on at least 3 occasions & driving the other way once, but I never got a chance to meet the owner.

It had a shift knob that I had not seen before & I have not seen since. And since the shift knob on my 88 is looking a little ratty (the leather is starting to curl up), I am interested in trying to find one like it. (I know, I could -- & may -- simply reglue the leather on mine, but it is rather plain-looking.)

The knob in question was leather & looked very similar to the stock knob, but it had a full-color Porsche crest on it instead of a shift pattern. Has anyone seen one like it, or better yet, know where I might buy one? FYI, I am not interested in most of the after-market knobs I have seen -- I want a near-stock look.

Maybe the guy simply glued a crest onto the factory knob?

Thanks in advance for any help....

Doug

I have one on my 79sc row.
But the clear rubber over the crest has turned a little white.
Anyone know how to restore?

I actually owned a 73.5 with a shift knob exactly like you are talking about. To me that was the perfect shift knob for a 911. I wish I could tell you where it came from but all I know is that my car had a custom leather interior and my shift knob was done in a leather to match my door panels. Let me know when you find one because I have been looking.

could it have been an AMCO? if you search on that (did I spell it right?) I know you'll find a wooden one - repalce the wood w/leather & I think that's what you saw

There's one on Ebay right now. Not mine.

However, it screws onto the shift lever. Only the earliest 911/912 levers are threaded.

I have one that slides on and attaches with set screws. NLA and I presume not that common. $75 + shipping. PM me if interested or let me know if Walmart is selling them for $20.

Sherwood,

Thanks. That is close. I will think about your offer.

That looks like the Empi shift knob but with a Porsche emblem instead of the Empi globe emblem.
