SSI early style heat exchangers and a 'stock' banana-style '65-'74 OEM muffler are supposed to be good for about 20-24 hp. If you substitute a modified, dual outlet 'sport' muffler based on the OEM banana, that is supposed to be worth another 10-12 hp. Whether you want to go with the AJ-USA $299 model, or the $750 Performance Products stainless model with the dual 4" outlets (and higher noise level) would depend on your budget and ear sensitivity ...

There are, of course, other sport muffler options out there, including modifying a 'stock' muffler yourself by adding a second outlet on the right side to 'mirror' the original outlet, but the two mentioned above are fairly well known quantities.

This may be a really dumb question. Where is the best place to get this type of exhaust?

IMHO SSI's are the best way to go. They recomend calling Aanse Bros. and buying a Monty muffler. They build the heat exchangers and know "BEST" what works with there product. Not some guy writing a book.

I recently purchased the ssi muffler with two 3" exhaust from performance. Although you will have to modify rear valance, its totally worth it. I do admit it is louder but a "good " loud. Once you get on the highway it mellows out. It's not as loud as a flow master but same tone. its GREAT!!!!!

I bought a pair of SSI's for $799 from Europroduct in St. Petersburg, FL. They advertise in Excellence and Panorama. That was the cheapest I found. I've seen them for as much as $599 a side from other places. Their web site is

This thread brings me to a question about the muffler on my 71 T. Warren mentions(and has in several previous threads) about adding a second outlet to a stock muffler. Do you change any of the internal baffles when doing this? Can I just cut a hole and weld a new outlet pipe on the right side? I would like a bit more power without being too loud.

I have instructions to gut the interior and build a "sport muffler." I did not think the extra noise would be worth it. I don't mind some more tone but being too loud is not good for me.

Would Midas still warranty the muffler if I added a second outlet to it? I doubt it. What about thoughts on the Bursch, Ansa, Monza, etc. They make inexpensive replacements. I am not sure how long they will last though. Thanks for your thoughts.

If you don't want to mess with the muffler, companies like AJUSA and Performance make "sport" versions that are better then stock but not as expensive as Triflow and Monti's.

Check out the Oct. 2000 Excellence Tech notes (B. Anderson) A guy in there bought the Performance Products sport muffler and said it was to loud. Said it sounded like megaphones. Bruce recommended the sport mufflers by S-Car-Go and Pressler Parts muffler.

If you add an exhaust tip at the opposite end of a single outlet hotdog muffler it will be VERY LOUD. Find a schematic for the stock pre-74 unit and you'll see why. You can only ballance out the sides by re-routing the innards.

Now, if you had a rice burner, you would simply "glue" a 4" outlet on the right side, without pentetrating the body of the muffler. This would look soooooo cool!

Everyone so far has talked about the backdated factory exhaust. What about custom header to setups available from B&B and others?

Custom race-type "headers" are very nice and VERY expensive. The SSI/hotdog muffler combo that we all speak of so often is the best bang for the buck. A member of out local PCA purchased such a custom exhaust - ballanced pipes, expansion chambers, race tuned muffler. Real nice stuff. Added something like 20hp to his 3.0L (formerly webers/SSI/hotdog) for ONLY $4000.
