Heat Exchanger delete?? To do or not to do!!!
 

When I bought my 79 sc the heat was not working.
I have never really needed it accept for maybe once in the morning this fall.

What do you all think about taking off the heat exchangers etc.

i would obviously keep all the parts and probably make it into a refurb project one winter is my thought.

What are the performance gains if I go to a straight exhaust set up?

Any suggestions or thoughts?

I would get the heat operating.

Comes in handy when you need defrost.

go ssi heat exchangers and pick up 15-20 hp along with outstanding Heat..

I agree with Ben. Unless you are tracking the car and don't need and want max performance than SSI's are the way to go.Then you can get an M&K muffler.

remember that you have a 3.o so there is NO comprimises this is the best bolt on performance you can do on a 3.0

the SSIs _are_ headers - they just have heat exchanger boxes wrapped around them

they are also stainless steel and will last longer than you or the car do

there is thus no engine performance benefit to "headers" over SSIs

headers will, however, reduce the wt. at the rear by about 16 lbs. -- that is worth something for a pure race care in a warm climate (are you planning on moving?)

so, you almost certainly want SSIs

I just went the SSI/M&K route. The heat is AMAZING, the car pulls very strong, and the sound is delightful. You won't be sorry

Heat? Who needs heat? Didn't any of you guys drive MG TCs in the old days? Oh, wait, probably not, since I'm into my seventh decade...

You live in BC, but you don't need heat? Oh, that's right - Canadians are really tough, and if Maple Ridge is by the Sound it's not really freeze the mucus in your nose cold so who cares?

Yes, your stock exhaust system is more restrictive than it needs to be for power (emissions are a different matter), and you can do better with headers. Bursch, for instance, in the 4-500$ US range. SSIs at over $1000. Look up SCargo headers for works of art and an even better design, but beaucoup bucks.

If you can scare up a set of the header/heat exchangers off of a '74 (or earlier, for that matter), they are of the "proper" configuration as well - each exhausts toward the rear of the engine on its own side. The heat exchanger sheet metal on those sometimes rusts out (I just replaced a set with SSIs for that reason, being a Colorado mountain heat needing wimp), but the exhaust path is the same as the SSIs.
