Carrera RS emblem
Was there ever a metal Carrera RS emblem that went in the same place as the decal on the 73 or 74 Carrera RS? I could swear I've seen one, but can't remember where.

Hi Jack, I have seen a Carrera 3.0 metal emblem but not an RS.

Hi Jack,
Yes there was a plastic "Carrera RS" emblem in '73 and then for a short time in '76. It didn't look too nice, kind of an afterthought, unfinished item. Still it is interesting from a rarity point of view. Regards, GeorgeK |

In Paul Frere's test of the RS 3.0 in Road & Track, there is a black RS emblem ... no '3.0,' no Carrera either! On your car, Jack, that would be kind of a 'stealth' emblem!!!

This reminds me of something!
I have a black 911 (like Jack - I wish!). As a 1975, it still has all the flashy "silver" trim. The 911S emblems came in black or gold colour. I have the latter. What am I supposed to do with that. You will never see black, and gold on a car with silver trim is a crime against aesthetics in my opinion. So, question: Am I right in believing that only black and gold were options in 1975 (it is the skinny writing style, fat writing waws 1976 onwards). Did pre '74 911S' come with silver emblems? Cam,
I don't think your gold emblems came from the factory in '75! I have the '75 911 brochure, and the '911S' emblems were black! The 911S still had clear anodized window trim, Carrera's had black. Gold emblems were standard thru '72 ... all '73 emblems went black 'fat style,' along with the horn grilles. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 08-31-2000).] |

Fair enough - a lot of stuff on the car isn't standard!
So what goes on black cars? Black emblem would blend right in. Cam |

Warren -
I'm interested in the RS-only emblem. Do you (or does anyone else) have a copy of the road and track article? Any idea on where I could get the emblem? (It sounds like a unique piece of badging for what I hope will be a unique car.) ------------------ --------------- Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/Jalopy.html |

Jack,
Are you going to add the Carrera script along the doors, or leave them bare to reflect all the cars you pass before the first turn?! In regards to a Carrera RS badge, my understanding is that Porsche only ever made decals for the RS, and unless someone has gone and made their own custom badges, I doubt you will find the item listed in Porsche’s spare parts inventory. That's not to say the custom made badges would necessarily be anything to scoff at, and if you do find someone who makes their own, and good ones to boot, then please, pass on the guy's details! |

I picked up a pair of "RS" badges from EBS. Automotion as well as tweeks carries them and performance. They are the plastic ones though.

The individual PORSCHE letters in gold were 1967-71, 1972-73 were black, 912 were silver in 1967-69. the 911S emblem was gold 67-71 and black 72-75, 911E same as 911S, 911T was chrome from 69-71 with gold as an option and black in 72 & 73. There was a "Carrera" stick on emblem in black and gold as an option on Carrera 2.7 cars. The RS emblem in plastic mut come from an RS America.

Hey Jack if that Black Beauty was my car I wouldn't even badge it. Keep it simple. One step on the accellerator pedal says it all.

There indeed was a plastic emblem from the factory that said Carrera RS, the same design as on the '73 RS. There were very few cars from the factory with it. It was reintroduced in '76 for the 123 Carrera 2,7s made that year for homologation purposes. In Switzerland, every '76 Carrera 2,7 had it on the engine lid.
I saw 2 of these, and they are factory parts for sure. GeorgeK |

Unless your car is a true "RS", you have no business designating yours as so. Truly, Ferry Porsche.

Jack, there were essentially 3 versions of the '73 Carrera RS - the M471 Sport model (later to be known as the 'Lightweight'), the M472 Touring & the M491 2.8 RSR racing model.
The 'Touring' had metal f&r bumpers, the more luxurious 2.4S interior & the raised plastic(?) Carrera RS badge on the ducktail whereas the 'Lightweight' had GRP f&r bumpers,stripped-out lightweight interior & the Carrera RS decal (transfer) on the ducktail. Check the picture of Mark Waring's 'Touring' on p.47 of "Original Porsche 911" by Peter Morgan. Hope this is the info you were seeking. Andy (UK) '69 911E |

Andy,
My white touring RS 73 has the decal writing on the rear lid. I haven't found any clue as to what cars get the plastic writing. Maybe the darker colored cars, for visibility? The car also has the fiberglass bumper. In France for instance, all the cars had the steel front bumper as a law requirement. The rules seemed to be that there were none at that time... The answer was sitting right by my desk. You're right, Andy, page 47 of Original Porsche 911 shows the emblem. I imagine if a buyer of a touring version of the Carrera RS wanted the stickers, instead, he could probably get them as an option.
I don't plan on the full Carrera sticker treatment, partly because I don't think it looks right with the chromed rocker panels, partly because the car is not a real Carrera RS. But with a 3.6 liter engine, what would be the best way to badge? I don't know, and the answer is complicated by the fact that I'm going to have three interchangable rear decklids: the stock one (which I'll probably put the original PORSCHE letters and 911T badge on), the ducktail (which could get the Carrera RS emblem), and the 964 lid with the retractable spoiler (which could get the RS emblem). I'm like a guy with three pair of work shoes. It would probably be better if I had fewer choices. ------------------ --------------- Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/Jalopy.html |

Jack, The Touring RSs had rocker panels, and the stripes do not clash. Golden stripes look great on a black car, but that is personal taste.

Jack,
for the ultimate "sleeper" look, just put on a 912E emblem! ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |
