how much should I expect to spend on a "good" repaint?

How much should I expect to spend on a "good" exterior repaint? Estimates from Pelicans from the South East would be appreciated. Its not something that needs to be addressed ASAP, but I need to be aware of what costs I will need to budget for in the future.

I think you are looking about $4-6,000.

I agree with this if its not a windows out job. If you want all deco removed, windows out, rubber out, chrome out.. etc.. figure 6-10k.

If you can paint yourself figure 40 hours and $600 in chemicals/ sand paper etc.. and rental of paint booth $500.

If its a change color add $2k. (doors gotta come off; lots of grease removed under the lids.. etc)

Anyody else agree with this?

Repaint

I had estimates for my 911 this year. 8k to 9k for base coat / clear coat in Guards Red. Lids and doors included.

I had to wet color sand and buff the car myself.

For my '72 (which is still in-process):
-I stripped the car - body shop got bare roller
-Body shop is hanging doors, fenders, hood, and decklid - but no other reassembly is being done by them
-Color is metallic silver (met base/clear)
-Work includes sublet of plastic blasting entire car and all panels (~$700)
-Prep includes several hours of body work, including re-reskinning doors, significant repair to pass rocker and jack tube, and misc. panel work
-Car is through all bodywork, and now in black high-build: no other 'surprises' are anticipated - current estimate of final bill is around $7-8k.

Note: I tried to go the cheap route first and that cost me time and a LOT of money. Now I'm with a shop that has references and examples, but they aren't cheap. But, the work is going to be done right.

Don't be taken in by the cheap shops, and bear in mind that the older your car is, the more surprises may be lurking underneath your paint.

Oh - bear in mind you'll usually end up replacing most or all of your seals and gaskets if you do a proper paint job- figure another $1k for a coupe, plenty more for a Targa.

Actually this sounds REALLY cheap to me.

I agree, for what's being done it is a bargain, but the bill is a lot more than I'm used to writing checks for... I found what may be the perfect shop - they do vintage Mustang restorations (currently six in various stages of completion, and the level of detail they go into on those cars is akin to what Kevin Jeanette does to early 911 sports racers - absolutely breathtaking) and maintain cash flow with collision work. They've done several Porsches, as the owner has known the owner of a local Porsche shop for years and gets referrals from him (that's how I found him). They are way out of any major metro area so overhead is good and low. The shop rates aren't low but they complete work very efficiently - some really excellent techs there and the owner is really seasoned. Frankly, they are struggling with the amount of work they've got right now - I think their secret may be out of the bag. Their Mustang jobs are from all over the country. When I was interviewing him during my selection process, and he was talking about replicating the paint drips on the frame rails as Ford had done when they dipped the cars in primer, I knew I had found the right guy.

Also keep in mind - several thousand dollars are saved when you take on the disassembly and reassembly aspects of the work.

it depends on cost of living & labor rates in your area

all the prices could be ballpark above, depending on area & quality
