Problems With RPM

Recently my car started experiencing this problem. D car simply wont go more than 4000 RPM and has a problem starting when it is wormed up. Does anyone know what could be causing this, and what I could do about it by my self.

Is it a sudden loss of power at 4000 or does it gradually loose power as you approach 4000 rpm? Does it make a difference how hard your accellerating? Does it have a stock ignition system? Mine had this problem and the distributor rotor had been burnt up.

Some more info about the car would be very helpful for everyone here to help with this problem. You definately came to the right place though to help find the problem

it is a 77 2.7L with a K-Jetronik. D car accelerates smothly to 4000 and then it simply wont go past D 4000 mark. If I keep pushing D car while D car is at 4000 there is a kind of a jearky feeling. Also Ive noticed that D fumes from my exost have a sent of gasoline. So does any one have any sugestions.

Does this car have the distributor rotor that cuts out to keep the motor from going too fast. That is, stops the electrical ignition as a "governor" or rev limiter? If so, perhaps it is engaging too soon.

At any rate, it sounds like your ignition is not working properly. A new cap and rotor is a good idea if they are old.
