Clutch in a 1973 911

I am going to look at a 1973 Porsche on saturday that needs a new clutch. Don't know it is a 914 or 911. I'm hoping a 911. I'll obviously know when I get there.
I was reading "The Used 911 Story" and was wondering if any of you had changed the clutch on either a 72 or 73. Any insight would be appreciated.

You have to drop the engine, seperate the tranny from the engine, replace the clutch, attach the tranny and engine, re-install back into car. Takes less than 2 hours if you've done it several times. If it's your first time, it will take a weekend.

There's also a pretty extensive 'while you're in there' list that can take a LOT more time. Highly recommended if this is a new car.

how hard this job is depends on how mechanical you are. you have to remove the engine to do the job. most people remove the engine and trans as a group and then seperate them outside of the car. at that point changing the clutch is fairly straight forward as you now have the trans free of the car and engine. you'll need to keep in mind that final adjustments might be required after you reinstall. since this is a 915 trans (if it is a 911) then you'll have a lot info in this board to assist you. the 901 trans has some well known issues (pivot ball) which you'll be glad to not have to mess with here.

Hey Mike,
Just as the others have said, if it is 911 the procedure will be pretty much the same as our cars.
Need any help?

Wayne,
If I get it, you know I'll be giving you a call.

I was more concerned with what the book said about having to completely dismantle the transmission in order to change the clutch!!!!

It will probably end up begin a 914 and all this will not make a difference anyway.

Mike

See Mike now you're learning. Every time you have a baby (gift for the wife) you should get a new toy!

Let me know if I can help you out at all.

Yep! I replaced my clutch this past summer on my '74 and BK911 is right. Just be sure to go slowly and carefully. Double-check to be sure the throwout lever is on the throwout bearing before you button it back (don't ask me how I know this!). Good opportunity to clean/inspect things, fix oil leaks, etc...

Finally got a hold of someone. It's a 914

I'm pretty disappointed right now. I probably still go over and look at it on saturday, but still................wish it were a 911.

I drive my 914 a LOT more than my 911. The 911 is actually frustrating to drive around town and in traffic because I always want to use all the throttle. Using all the throttle in the 914 really doesn't do much. Different cars for different applications. Plus you could always do a 6 conversion later down the road.

Wayne,
I know. I know. I had to sell the slk as the great gas saving car the last time. We might just have to get a minivan when the M-class calls it a day. Until then, I am just going to keep on going as long as I can get away with it. Hey just think a few years down the road we will have our sons in the garage working on cars with us. I am really looking forward to that.

BK911,
I'll probably go and look at the 914 anyway on saturday. It is in an auction. If the price is right who knows!

Mike
