oil pressure - '88 Carrera

I have an '88 Carrera with 106k on the clock. Good compression (150-160), runs strong

The oil pressure needle bounces between 1.5 units to 3.0 units while at idle or low rpm. Other times, it bounces between 3.0 units to right off the hi needle, I can hear it as well as see it.

Seems to be steady at about 4.5 unts at cruise (2500-3000 rpm).

Car is totally stock, never had engine apart or top end work, uses about 1.5-2.0 qts oil during 3 k oil change intervals.

Thoughts/suggestions?

I had a similar problem with my '88. The oil pressure sender was bad. I replaced the sender and all was back to normal.

For my 87' the manual states that the guage should read a minimum of 3.5 bar @ 4K RPM. If it bounces a lot I suspect a bad sending unit. Motor is probably fine.

thanks guys...I'll look into that...I was thinking
along the lines of the oil pressure relief valve/spring
but your counsel is worth looking into.....
