915 Rebuilt - No reverse!!!!

I may have screwed up my 915 rebuilt. So far no leaks. I just installed both engine and tranny. Prior to putting it all together (wiring, oil lines, oil, etc.) I though I would check the shifting.

I installed the clutch cable. I depressed the clutch, shifted into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th successfully. However, I could not shift into reverse.!!!!!

Where did I go wrong? Help!!!!!

Could it be that little 'rod' that is supposed to activate the reverse switch?

It could very well simply be a mis-adjsutment at the shift coupler.

Another possibility is that the reverse lockout tab on the top of the shift housing is hanging up slightly on the tab welded onto the shift rod. Also an easy fix (if that's the problem).

Try lifting the boot up on your shifter to see if the tab that KnotOffice is referring to is interfering with pulling the shifter back.
As the car is not running, try having someone give the car a little push while you try reverse. Maybe the gear teeth are just clashing?

I guess you could pull the reverse switch and see if it goes into reverse. The narrowed tip of the reverse light pin goes into the switch.

It's poltergeist! I just went to the car to try it again. And now it shifts into Reverse! Really freaky.

The rebuild was completed 5-6 months ago. Did the gears just need time to 'loosen up'?

As I understand it, reverse has no syncro-gear. It is possible for reverse not work, if the car is not running and the gears line up a certain way. Had the car ben running? If so, did you let the clutch out while in neutral, then try reverse again? Just some ideas...
