Transmission noise

My 915 transmission drives ok and shifts without grinding if you let the RPM drop some between shifts. My main concern is it has a strange rattling noise like shims that spin freely around a shaft. It makes the noise in all gears with no change in the sound, it is not a continous noise but happens quite a bit. Any thoughts on what this rattling noise might be.

Let the car idle in neutral, clutch out, make noise? Push clutch in, does noise go away?

If yes then most likely throw out bearing.

Porsche Crest

Paul,

If the rattling is ocurring at low rpm ... say 1000 - 2000 rpm, then it isn't anything to worry about! Just such noise has been the reason for much R&D at Porsche in the past 25 years ... and some ideas that perhaps shouldn't have been incorporated into production models, such as the infamous SC 'exploding' rubber-centered clutch disk, have resulted from that R&D!

Some noise is perfectly normal from a transaxle, and only when Porsche started catering to the luxury, upscale lawyer/doctor clientele ... did NVH concerns start to impact and override performance goals in the '70's and '80's.

stomachmonkey, it is definitely not a throwout bearing, at first I thought that it might be.

Early_S_Man, I had a 73 that did not make any noise like this so I am sure something in the transmission needs attention. I had a new clutch put in recently so I do not think the clutch is the problem. Also the noise was there before I had the clutch done.

Thanks for the replys.

Hey Paul,

So I'm driving in this morning and I hear this intermittent high pitched jingling.

Immediately thought about your post and started to get that nervous feeling in my wallet.

Had a real hard time figuring out where it was coming from, sounded like the tunnel where all the linkage runs.

Turned out to be a zipper pull on my briefcase.

Have you looked for loose items in the car?

Have you done a "nut and bolt".

Something I have always done on my older cars is to take a day and go around looking for loose fittings.

You'd be surprised how much stuff can come undone over the years.

This is not a subtle noise it is loud enough you would hear it if I drove by you standing on the street.

Have you ver found out what was the source of this noise? I have a very similar situation on my car.
Thanks
