As a HSM (home shop machinist) with a CNC the machining part is definately easist. It's all the other stuff that adds up.
I've been toying with twin plug myself since I have a twin plug here on my bench for reference. I've already partially written the code for my CNC. My thought was to actually make a twin cap distributer, gear driven with GM caps and rotors. For crank trigger with an MSD I've thought about making my own rear engine mount ot incorporate MSD's crank trigger for V6 engines then split the signal from the trigger, but this would likely require a splitter box of some sort. Option two is twin GM mag pickups in the distributer housings. Since the Porsche dizzy isn't stuck driving an oil pump I don't see a big benefit in crankfire like I did when drag racing small block Ford engines. GM's where even worse due to camshaft twist with heavy springs and lots of lift. Still even if I did all that I still would need a second MSD box, timing computer, coil and another set of plug wires. That's a good chunk of change right there. |
Some people are running EDIS twin-ed up. I have the parts and there is a wiring diagram posted up here. Used parts cost ~150 but it is a kluge and you have to have an ECU to control the PIP/SAW signals.

That would be your choice. If you just want spark you can use other Ford parts. If you want ignition control you can use Megasquirt. Its a kluge like I said but its up to just how much you want to experiment and how much you want to drive ;-)
I see you're onto Steve W, he'll do a good job, solid advice. |
I don't think the 964 dizzy with early internals will work for dd74, unless you are tearing down the whole engine. I went with this setup to twin plug my engine and it requires you to use a 3.6 distributor drive gear on the crank. BTW, I worked with Steve W for the dizzy and my PMOs, and he is the BEST!

Well - Steve W. sent me some...ur...poignant emails, so I'm currently looking for parts and doing research toward twin-plugging. First I'll do a leakdown, then pull my plugs and see if there's metal shavings and what-not on them. If so, hey, WTF, may as well go for a 2.8.
Plus, I'm looking into rebuilding my transmission. Sheesh! Maybe a new car might be more feasible. |

Keep that car and fix it up,...:) :) If you cannot find anyone to read your plugs, send 'em to me and I'll have a looksee for you. Give me a heads-up since I will be gone for a few weeks. |
Anyone know what Henry charges to convert a stock SC distributor to a twin?
