Shudder/backfire question

My SC has been running PERFECTLY. A couple months ago I went to SSIs and M&K 2/1 muffler. Car has been running like a top, loud and strong. Even idle at 900, no sign of any sort of surging or hunting.

Tonight I downshifted for a slow corner, was in 2nd and it started bucking. Next it sounded like someone standing outside the driver's door shot a 44 magnum. Scared the living **** out of me. Car cut off. I pulled over, waited a second, turned the light switch off, pumped the pedal once, it started right up. About 30 or 40 yards later it shuddered, and just shut off. No backfire.

I shut off the lights, didn't pump the pedal at all. Started it right up and let it idle for a minute, then I started out smoothly, revving to match revs before downshift, didn't let it 'coast' in neutral or with clutch in, drove home about 2 miles.
No problems. Sat in the garage with it idling, checked the oil, it's just above mid-level, rev'd the **** out of it 3 times, let it idle for a few more minutes, then shut her down.

CIS experts : any clues what this might've been ? I decided not to go run any errands until girlfriend can drive along with me in her Acura tomorrow and see how it goes.

My gut tells me it was the oven-self-cleaning-cycle and it's going to be fine, but I know squat about CIS and am not a DIY'er.

Thanks

Was it damp or raining out? Sounds like a wire misfire. How old are the ignition wires? Take a look at the wires in the dark with the engine running. There should be no "light show". Nor should one be induced by a light spray of water from an atomizer.

yes, damp out after raining all day, I just checked in the garage with lights off, no light show. PPI a bit over a year ago (June '05) doesn't mention wire replacement, just plugs. In the time I've had it over at the local tech for stuff no wire replacement, so I believe they may be original.

So.... what brand/seller/etc, and more than just 6 from dist to plugs, right ? Are sets sold for a CIS car that have good feedback ? (while I may have sought out SSIs and a M&K for throttle response and HP and noise, I didn't give the wires a 2nd thought)

THANKS for the feedback

just checked our sponsor, Magnecor looks like the ticket. So given the fact that I don't know if they're original, is this purchase a good proactive move ? Seems so.....

I replaced mine with the Magnecors and am quite happy with them. BTW., you said you switched your SC to SSI with a 1 in 1 out. Wouldn't it have to be a 2 in 1 out? Mine is.

sorry, meant 2-1. Used to have 1-1 Dansk. I guess I should try the Magnecors. Thing has been running like clockwork, and has been getting all the duty for 1.5 months since wrecked Mini. Once Mini is back next week I'll get new wires for the SC.

Check all ignition parts, including coil and coil wire, rotor and cap. Also check for moisture in the DME.
