Ball Joints

Is there an easy way to check the front ball joints and bushings? (short of removing them first) What is the typical lifespan of these parts? (no racing, just daily commuter traffic) I'm at 95k now and have never checked the suspension. (rock solid)

My ball joints were completely shot after 120 K. They are not too difficult to replace, but get the right spearator tool and definately get the cogged adapter to unscrew the cap.

One low tech old method to test for play is to cup the ball joint in your hand and have an assistant turn the wheel to and fro. Fingers being sensitive things it's suprising how you can detect relative motion between the ball and cup. A good joint will have no relative motion.
