Torsion bars

In my quest to make my car handle better, ( and make my cd player unusable), I'm looking to upgrade my torsion bars. Stock on my model is 18.8mm front and 25mm rear. Upgrading to 22mm front and 28mm rear. Maximum is 23 and 30mm. If you have a 3.2 and done this, what did you use. Ride quality is not an issue, (if so, I would of quit years ago.) It seems Sway A Way is commonly used. Any other brands worth considering. Thanks as always. Michael

I just got done upgrading my 3.2 to 22 mm front and 28 mm rear. I used sway-away after finding that the weltmeister drilled were having "significant delays". My thoughts.. the car rides more controlled (better IMHO). If I were going to do it again, I think I might even go stiffer on the rear (29-30). I still think the back is a bit soft, but that could also be the extra weight of the targa glass, etc.

I got mind 3.2 done couple years ago. I got 23 in the front and 33 at the rear through Sander Engineering. Excellent quality IMHO. You can find their info on B.Anderson's Handbook. There's a list of supplier at the end of the book. And I think that's the brand he recommonded also. I majorly use the car on track and some weekend drivings just to keep everything in condition. The ride is accetable cause my CD player still works in this condition. Plus, I have Charlie bars replaced the OE sway bars.

Andy, you used 33mm in the back? Is your car a turbo? Nobody I spoke to recommended anything over 30 for nonturbo coupes but I have to think its pretty stiff. I appreciate the advice, maybe I will go with 23-30. I already have Bilstein Sports on now, did that have anything to do with the sizes you chose? I did see what Anderson wrote about in chosing manufacturers. He does'nt seem to like mainstream producers for parts so it makes it hard to shop around. Once again, thanks Michael

89911,

I put 22/28MM torsion bars on my '84 911 Targa about a year ago; I used Sway A Way bars. I also added Bilstein "Sport" shocks at both ends. I am very satisfied with this new set up.

On the track, the rear is a little "soft", but acceptable. The front is rock solid on the track. On the street, both ends are very firm. The ride on the street gets a little choppy if you are driving over a rough surface (CD still works though).

I have a friend with a '87 911 that has 22/30MM torsion bars. His car is very tight in the rear; he uses his car for mostly Driver's Ed/Time Trial events. I feel it's to firm for street driving, YMMV.

I went with 22/28MM bars because that was BA's recommendation for a 911 with mixed street and track usage. If you are serious about using larger torsion bars (i.e. 23/30MM), I would recommend you find someone that has that setup and go for a ride.

Regards, Bruce
