Need help diagnosing cold start problem
I've got a cold start problem and I need some help solving it.
I had a local shop rebuild my tranny, so both tranny and engine were removed from my car. The car had no cold start problems before the engine drop and ran very well. After I got the car back I noticed the problem and brought it back to the shop -- they couldn't repeat the issues I was having (probably didn't wait for the car to get stone cold), and said to give it a tune and see if the problem still persists. I still have the problem following the tune-up. 1982 911SC 3.0L Tune-up: new oil and oil filter, new air filter, new cap & rotor, new spark plugs, adjusted valves, adjusted idle, adjusted timing. It seems like it's just not getting enough gas during cold starts. I read that it's possible to reverse the plugs for the WUR and CSV. Could this be the problem? |
If you have the old plugs try swapping them and see what happens.

I no longer have the old plugs. But, my cold start problem didn't change after I installed the new plugs. The old plugs still looked pretty good.

car needs to be cranked alot before it starts? and when it does, it chugs to life?
check to see if the wires on the thermoswitch are hooked up correctly, or even at all. they have a designated polarity. left side timing chain cover. i messed mine up, on my drop. i hooked them up backwards. they are sized differently to prevent this, but.... |
The thermoswitch wires are hooked up and appear to be correct.
The car does do a lot of chugging, which it's never done in the past immediately after a tune-up. Only when the car is stone cold does it need to be cranked a lot. |
Sounds like a major vacuum leak. Maybe forgot to hook up a hose?

make sure the wires are hooked up correctly. take a mirror and see if the plug is hooked to the CSV. wouldnt a vacumn leak show up with the car warm too?

The thermotime switch circuit gets power from a connection on the solenoid. Check to make sure they remembered to put the connector back on after changing the trans. And yes, it does matter which way the wires on the switch are hooked up,

There was time my '85 911 would not run when cold unless I rev'd the engine until warm.
Air Idle control valve was bad, it sets idle at cold by bypassing throttle plate. |
