swepco

Hugh,
I don't know if you ever decided on the swepco product or not, but I just drained my '84 911's tranny and filled it with Swepco, it is like driving a new car. My tranny was rebuilt 50k miles ago so it is not at all worn out or anything, but it was a bit notchy specially when cold, but now I can truly say it shifts much better cold and shift even better when warmed up. Just thought I'd pass on my 2 cents from my personal experience with it.

Take care,
Frederic

EDIT: AS my car is apart until spring I won't know until I get a few miles on it.

Sorry for resurrecting old thread (at least I searched first!).

Wayne, I'm considering the same combination (dino 75/90 and Lucas oil stabilizer) -- how did this work out for you?

Stock 85 w/915.

Thanks,

Dale

LONG thread, definitely worth reading...

Thanks, Pete -- FWIW, I've read this thread a couple of times (like a good movie, I pick up a little more each time). Also am working my way through your 915 transmission repair tutorial -- mostly for general understanding and background info; don't need any kind of repairs at the moment.

But I was just curious about adding the Lucas Oil Stabilizer and whether it might hurt/help synchro engagement on the 915. Since Wayne mentioned he tried it, I was hoping he'd share that experience.

IIRC, someone sent the lucas oil stabilizer in to Blackstone or Stavely a while back. All it does is increase the viscosity of the oil you add it to.

There is no substitute

Am specifically curious whether anyone's actually used it in a 915 and what their experience is, particularly w/shifting into 1st and 1-2 shift when cold. Not so much a viscosity issue, but wondering whether Lucas provides a little extra adhesion/surface tension on synchros and sliders that might ease 1st and 1-2 engagement.

That's why I was hoping Wayne would share his experience.

Thanks.

Swepco does not need any thing added to it.

Wow, I had to go out and check to see what color fluid drips I had from the gearbox.:D

Sorry Dale, but I used Swepco in the box. No Lucas, either.

FWIW, the improvements I saw were more due to having the shift coupler adjusted properly as well as practicing the proper technique for shifts.

BTW-The Kendall GL-5 80/90 seems to be the recommended fluid as of late.

Kendall NS-MP SAE 80W-90 4 qts X $4.49 = $17.96 Aubuchon Hardware 800.431.2712
Best advice I ever got from Pete Zimmermann! I would have paid 10X
I was replacing Swepco 201 which was 32 months and 11,075 miles old.
Noticed a difference in the first 30 minute drive. I don't "think" about shifting my 79 SC anymore

Thanks, all
