Max. wattage in '87 headlights?
Thought about the upgrade I just did and wondered if 80 watts was too high in my '87? The high beam is 100 watts.

H4s? That's getting up there....I use H4s with the 80w bulbs and they are plenty bright.

H4s or H5s? Did you add a relay as well?

You don't say if you are still running the H5s or if you upgraded to H4s.
I have run 80/100s for years in both H5s and H4s. The the little itty-bitty connectors on the H5 need to be in great shape to be reliable of years. I burned up a couple connectors before I got serious about good connectors. They must be very clean and they must be very tight. I protected them with dielectric grease and tweak the female connector so it grips very hard. The H4 has much better connectors so it isn't much of an issue but there is no reason not to take the same care. Either way the H4s with 55/60 bulbs puts out more usable light then the H5 does with 80/100s. No matter what you are doing... (including if you have stock bulbs) You should really upgrade to a relay setup on the headlights. Even at the stock wattage this can help the headlight switch and the turn indicator's dimmer switch last a lot longer. The turn indicator switch is an expensive little bit so it is cheap insurance.

Thanks for the advice! I was concerned about the temperature issue, apparently not a problem with the stock H5 plastic reflector. I also ordered High Temp H5 bulb sockets with #12AWG pig tails, and will apply OXGUARD GREASE (3M) to the connectors' terminals, seems to be just the right product for this application according to the label. H4 conversions are ridiculously too expensive, $400? For a little more cash one could install a pretty good HID although it would be low beam only.
BTW, I heard HID may be replaced with LED in the near future. They're working on it now. Imagine that, no ballast or starters, or special hi-volt wires. Loads cheaper than HID. I wonder if you could get any color you want? |
