CV Boot Replacement

I have a 81SC, and found that my rear passenger side, outer CV Boot cover is starting to show some age, and just started to crack. I heard that they are easily replaced by just removing the drive axle on the transmission side and removing the boot. Can someone help with a description how to replace this boot. Thank you.

If you can find a two piece boot it's even easier. Just cut the old boot off and put the new one on. The joining adhesive used actually vulcanizes the material. It's a very permanent bond. If you plan on cleaning and repacking the joint, leave the old boots on while removing the shaft. It helps keep the joint straight while removing the shaft. Keeping the joint aligned on axis helps in preventing it from falling apart while removing the shaft. Once off, I filled a bowl with gasoline, held the shaft vertically, Then slid the boot on the lower joint up the shaft exposing the joint keeping the joint aligned, then kept dipping the joint in the gas to get the old grease out. If you start moving the joint around alot it can come apart so be a little carefull. Last I blew them out with compressed air, and repacked with CV grease. Just pack the joint not the whole boot. Also, There are flange gaskets at each end of the shaft where it bolts up that might get broken upon removal. I used tye wraps to secure the ends of the boots. Not a hard job.

Good luck,
Leon 78SC
