Saint Wevo. With a silver halo.

A gratuitous "art" shot, taken, I assure you, completely by accident:

Okay, what the hell, content:

Probably no one remembers or cares, but I've occasionally yacked about my motor mount upgrades, and then the Stomski shift coupler upgrade (same deal as the Wevo).

Well, this shifter is the crown jewel in that whole package of ascension to shifting heaven.

First run was Thanksgiving. Brilliant. Breathtakingly fast. I'm shifting almost as fast as in my VW, and not a whole lot slower than in an S2000. I do not joke.

The throw is longer of course, and the tall knob accentuates that, but it's so close to hand. It also offers a wonderful tactile experience; it's so silky smooth and nicely contoured. Too bad it'll mostly get driven with gloves.

Yesterday, I was even able to double clutch downshift from second to first gear while rolling at about twenty miles an hour. Just for fun. No grind, no hesitation, no balking. It slipped right in. Try that on a stock 915!

I'm happy.

Pieter -

Just got my car back with the transmission and LSD re built, along with the Wevo upgrades.

Am still driving it on the street, and the Wevo system is very noisy. Shifts unbelievably, but since I didn't do the install myself I'm wondering if it will ever be as quiet as it was pre Wevo. Will tweaking get the gear noise out?

Somehow, I doubt it, but others with a lot more knowledge than myself might know better.

Did you have an LSD in it before? They are really noisy in slow town driving, at least mine is. It's at 80%.

Even so, my car doesn't make a good barometer, since the only interior of any kind it has is an RS carpet kit, no headliner, a very loud exhaust, and so forth. I do hear a fair amount of transmission noise as well. So if the shifter is making additional noise, it gets lost in the din. If you've got solid or possibly Wevo tranny mounts, putting in a softer factory mount might help, but then your shifting will take a small bump backwards. FWIW, I didn't notice a marked increase in noise when I switched to the Wevo tranny mounts (and solid RSR motor mounts); only very slight.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response, I'm willing to bet you're right.

Nope, haven't done the solid motor / tranny mounts. And yes, it had LSD before. I'm thinking that the trade off for good shifting is gear noise...

It's wierd - I was headed in the same direction you are - dedicating it as a track car.

I was surprised after doing the suspension upgrades (Polybronze bushings, 23 / 31 torsion bars, Bilstein sport's, etc. ) that it was so much better behaved as a road car. When the transmission was out this time I had them put in new soundproofing. The two in two out muffler is actually pretty quiet now with the windows rolled up. It sounds crazy, but it makes a pretty good daily driver.

Guess my first dedicated track car will be a beat up 944...

I had installed the Wevo engine/trans mount in my car.
Drove around the block once, and removed them.
Too harsh (loud) for my tastes....and I drive my car mostly in autocrosses and track events.
I don't think they are much less noisy than solid metal mounts.

For me whatever the improvement in shifting would be....was not a big enough change for me to put up with the added noise of the Wevo mounts.

JMO...
I am sure many people may like the Wevo mounts.
And there is no question that product quality is high.

But for me in the end, they just transferred too much drive train noise into the cockpit.

Steve, I'm not surprised at all to hear that your car is better behaved on the street. Those Elephant polybronze bushings are magic. In a world where compromise usually leaves both sides wanting, it's incredible to have something like those bushings that impart an unquestionable performance advantage and yet also create MORE comfort rather than less, which is usually the case with race stuff. I love them.

I have 23/31 bars too, although my Bilsteins are shortened and custom valved since I'm now running RSR struts (19mm raised spindles). If I didn't have a full track alignment, I dare say it would make a tremendous street rocket, although rare are the places where you can really open it up.

One thing that can cause excessive noise with the Wevo mounts installed, is pre-load between the trans and engine crossmembers.

To remove this pre-load, just loosen all four of the bolts simultaneously that attach the rear engine cross beam to the engine console mount. This will relieve the pre-load, and probably greatly reduce the noise transmission.

Thanks Tyson -

did a search and could not come up with a picture. Just want to make shure I'm loosening / tightening the right bolts. Can figure it out from the "Porsche tech tip" but if you have a picture available please post.

Sorry Pieter, didn't mean to steal your thread
