How Hard Is It To Fit 6 1/2" Speakers In The Front Door?
Ok after I get my 69 painted I'm planning on doing a few interior upgrades. Probably some new carpet, a dashc over and a CD player.
My question is has anyone ever tried isntalling 6 1/2" speakers in the doors of a 69 model? I know there would have to be some cutting involved but is it possible without any realy fabrication? I have some really ncie Boston Acoustics 6 1/2"s left over from an older installation. I'd like to put those in the doors and cover them up with some nice Boston Acoustics grilles. Possible? How hard? Thanks, Dustin |

I am in the process of putting 6 1/2 MB Quart Q speakers in the doors of my 78 911, with manual windows. They will fit, with minimal cutting, if you use spacer rings- my speakers came with them, you can also make your own using MDF or particle board. The factory calls for a 5.75 inch cutout for my 6 1/2 speakers, using the spacers. Your Boston speakers probably came with spacer rings.
The main concern with this kind of installation is to make sure that the window crank can travel its full arc without hitting the speaker. Check this before cutting. If you are willing to cut a larger hole, you can flush mount and avoid the possible conflict with the window crank. If you do this, make sure you have enough clearance behind the speaker. In general, I think unless the speaker you have chosen has an enormous magnet, it will fit. |

6 1/2" speakers should fit. I put some infinity separates in my '69. To keep the profile low enough to clear the window crank, mount the speaker directly onto the metal door panel and find some flush-fitting covers that mount separately onto the fabric door panel. Finding flat grills might be the hardest part. No cutting should be necessary other than routing speaker wire through the door jamb into the car (use a grommet after drilling to protect wires).

Well these Boston Acoustics 6 1/2"s I plan to use need a 5" Cutout and have a 2 1/2" depth.
They are certainly not small for a 6 1/2" then again for the price I paid for them they shouldn't be ![]() I did have them In my 93 Ford F150 being ran off a 75X2 Eclipse amp and they sounded great. Now I'm going to put them in the Porsche and run them off of an A/D/S/ 20x4 (still need to find a nice place for rears) amp. I think they should still sound great though. But I'll probably never even turn the radio on because the car sounds so darn good! It has a Bursch racing exhaust and to put it plain and simple it sounds identical to a duny buggy ![]() Lot's of fun especially here in Kentucky. |
