Odometer stopped working

Hello
The odometer on my 1980 SC stopped working. The speedo and all other instruments work fine.
The good: the miles are staying low
The bad: I’m going to have to fix it.

What kind of trouble is it to replace the cable?

It isnt a cable. It is a plastic gear inside the speedo that dries out and breaks. Do a search here for odometer repair.

North Hollywood Speedometer can repair this for you as well.

My 1980 had the same problem. I used the 101 Projects book as a reference and pulled out my gauge and fixed in myself. The innards looked slightly different from the ones in the book, but the book was close enough. Don't over-disassemble. Basically, a white plastic support that holds a little shaft for the odometer gear had broken. I believe it had aged and cracked. I used a set of magnifying glasses and performed microsurgery but cleaning the broken part's mating surfaces really well with alcohol and then supergluing with a superglue gel applied with a straight pin. It was tricky because there was a risk of gluing the shaft. It works great now, and I was able to preserve my highly desirable vintage 85-MPH speedometer, too :) . I say pull it out and give it a shot. At the very worst you chicken out and get it repaired or get a used one. Good luck

I chickened out after I got the speedo out (easy) and tried to open the case, which is where I got scared and possibly lazy. $110 and 2 days to fix it. Plenty of places, look for speedometer repair in your area or search this site.

You could send it to the guy I used in austin, pm me if you want his contact info.

Make sure to keep any and all receipts in case you sell your car to be on the up-and-up.

I got the plastic gear off ebay and fixed it myself. I wasn't that hard.

Send it to North Hollywood Speedometer, they'll clean, repaint the dial and calibrate it.

I fixed mine myself and it really wasn't too hard. I bought a spare speedo at a swap meet just in case but I didn't need it afterall.
