Firestone tires
Yesterday I borrowed my wifes suburban to take several people to a conference in Canada. Shortly after returning across the border on I-5 my right rear tire blew out. Just like you've seen the pictures on tv, Tread seperated from the tire. 16" Steeltex A/T, not a recalled tire and not on a Ford. Be tough for firestone to blame this one on Ford. No one was hurt and the only damage was to my rim. I rarely drive this car but am glad that it was me and not my wife and two month old baby.
Anyone want to take a stab at how many revolutions the wheel turned after the blow-out. I was traveling at about 75mph and did break moderatly after the blow-out. |

Too bad...I personally think that Firestone is up S**T Creek! I feel that is inevitable that they will have to increase the scope of the recall. Their construction process itself has to be at fault. Hey I blew a front Firestone 15' ATX (recall tire) at 60 MPH out in the middle of the Astoria-Megler bridge last April. I removed all of the Firestones and put on another brand. Normaly i'm not very lucky but this time I was, didn't get hurt nor was my 1994 Ford Ranger 4x4 beat up. I don't know why but I saved the three good tires and the one that blew still mounted ont the beat up alloy rim and now have something to get a rebate on.

Yep, Firestone went downhill IMHO w/ the Bridgestone buyout years ago. I may be biased -- I lost them as a nationwide account at that time, used to have my software in every Firestone mfg. plant. I was driving through Topanga Cyn today next to an Explorer still wearing 235/70 ATX's...

I think that maybe you have it backward. The last time I bought a Firestone was in the late 70's when they made the Firestone 500 which interestingly enough had the same problem as the tires today.I experienced it first hand when my left front tread completely left its tire when I was going 75mph on the highway. Luckily I didn't hit the breaks. They to eventually got pulled from the shelves.
I on the other hand use Bridgestones on my truck and can only say great things about them. I think it is unfortunate for Bridgestone that they are in bed with Firestone. [This message has been edited by Bobboloo (edited 09-16-2000).] |

Firestone is indeed in deep trouble.
Michelins are indeed the best. IMH, relatively uneducated, O. Yokohamas are excellent, I've heard. My '83 SC with Michelin Pilots are ready to go up against many (of course heavier) cars with anti-lock brakes in a braking contest. that's important to me. ------------------ '83 SC |

Put 5 Michelins on yesterday I already had them on our Accord and love the ride, saved the blown out Firestone, even though it has not yet been recalled, inhopes of getting my $120 per tire back. I was on hold for over two hours yesterday to Firestone and finally gave up. If they truly want to make it right they need to put some resources into this process to make it easier for the consumer.

Bobboloo -- FWIW, I view the Bridgestones (Japanese) as different animals from the Firestones (American). They are, however, the same corporation now.
