breather hose

has anyone been able to replace the breather hose from engine to oil filler neck on an SC?
can it be done without dropping the engine?

Sounds like you're describing the hose that I mentioned in the "Blind Oil Leak" thread. I did replace mine on my '80 SC, but with the engine out of the car. As mentioned in my previous reply, the current replacement is a 2-piece hose with a connector.

I sincerely doubt that it's feasible to replace the hose with the engine in the car. The end at the filler wouldn't be bad, but the other end dives down through some CIS plumbing enroute to the breather cover. I suppose it's technically possible that it could be done, but you'd have to be very, very good with mirrors and flashlights and oddly angled screwdrivers and possess good wrist strength at bizarre angles. Even with the engine out, I think I had to remove the funky 3-into-1 hard metal CIS line in order to gain adequate access to the connection point on the cover.

Yes, you can put that hose back in without REMOVING the engine. You do need to LOWER the engine several inches to provide extra clearance. And as mentioned, mirrors, dexterity, and strength. And LOTS of patience. You should not have to remove any components to get it in, but some bending and threading will be required.

I just forgot to put that hose back on the engine before reinstalling the engine. Really paid for that mistake. But it was still better than removing and reinstalling the engine just to put it back on more conveniently.
