I only bought one thing on Ebay. A muffler. I wished I hadn't. It was not as represented. It not only turned out to be useless but it caused me much grief before I found it to be culprit of smoke pouring out my exhaust. I would suggest you consider COD or some other means of protection before buying on Ebay. I feel the people on this BBS are real Porsche enthusiasts and are overall better to deal with.

Have as well purchased hundreds of items on Ebay and 99% of them were just fine. Usually the problem, if there was one, was lack of knowledge on the seller.

Have had two problems there, one with a worthless seller (went to the police and got my money back) and the other where the US Postal Service lost the package and the seller dropped the ball and did not insure the package.

Bottom line is: if the seller does not feel good, then do not do it. Use Pay Pal with a credit card and if the item is not as representated, then you can cancel the purchase. If you pay by check you are SOL...

I have purchased a lot of stuff off ebay. Some good, few bad. I bought a 911 five blade fan, housing and altenator from Wayne at Carrera Classics, No complaints. It was as advertised. I have been trying to buy some jugs/pistons also but they had been backordered. With anyone on ebay check the feedback section and most importantly participate in this system for the next guy.
One word of warning don't buy anything from Julian, NC. That is Ian Nelson a liar, cheat, and card carrying member of the Future Felons of America.

I have also bought lots of (mainly Porsche) items on ebay with only one problem - dealing with Ian Nelson (as mentioned above & on many other occasions on this BBS). In my case the risks with ebay purchases are greater than with some other buyers since I'm in the UK. However, following sensible guidelines including checking seller's feedback & emailing questions before bidding, 99% of the problems can be avoided.
I too have bought 911 parts from Carreraclassics & each time the parts have equalled, or exceeded the described condition.

Same here: my very 1st E-Bay purchase was this past May; bought a 1986 930, sight unseen. To top that off, I wired the full purchase price amount to the individual's checking account ! The following Saturday, I flew to the Buyer's respective city, whereby he picked me up at the airport and drove to his home. 2 hours later, I was on the road, for the 800 mile drive home. What might even be more outlandish is when the seller said to me, " this 930 will probably drive like most other 930's you've driven", my response was-" driven ?- this is the 1st time I've ever even seen a 930 ( other than pictures ) ! I thought he was going to fall over !

The car actually was far better than I imagined, I assuming of course the seller would "overate" the vehicle . Actually, the two deficent items he mentioned to me, over the phone prior to purchase , were so insignificant that I myself would never have even brought them up.

I have since put 6,000 miles on the car, with no surprises in the maintenance "department". Would I do it again ? Absolutely positively not ! I lucked out once, will not go for it a second time ! By the same token, there are honest folks out there, and at some point I guess you got to trust people, but in retrospect, I could never do this again !

You're far bolder than I was. I sent a few hundred ahead as a deposit, then flew down and had the car checked over. It turned out to be as good as advertised and I commenced the 1200 mile drive back home. One thing of note:

When I got back to Chicago, I took the car to a local mechanic for routine maintenance and called later to see if the car was ready. "What car?" "The red SC." Long pause, then the guy started hitting me with questions: Did I buy the car recently? Hadn't I had it inspected? Had I paid a lot for it? Because it was in terrible shape, awful condition, I'd better come down so they could show me...
I cabbed it there after work, explained who I was, and immediately everyone in the shop gets this look - like the doctor's about to diagnose me with something terminal. (And from the way my stomach is feeling, they may not be far off!) I follow the owner back into the shop, and he begins weaving through rows of Porsches towards the lift, and passes mine. He's already started pointing out the problems on a red SC *coupe* when I explain that I've come for the red SC *targa.*
"Oops."
I wanted to kill the guy! I was damn close to a heart attack, and I'm much too young to die. Turned out mine was fine, though.

I've never dealt with carrera classics, but there has been a discussion about them on the 356 registry's email list (www.356registry.org). Unfortunately, the majority of the posts were overwhelmingly negative and advised staying away.

I have bought a bunch of stuff from e-bay and will sell alot of my old 944 spare parts their as well. With a 1973 911T the parts are few and far between so I cannot expect them to exceed what the photographs may show, but I do expect the ashtray, cigarette lighter, light switch and some trim not to be perfect from a dismantled old car. Just to fillin the slots! Prices are reasonable but I use caution as well. COMMUNICATE with the seller before you buy and DEFINITELY read over the testimonials on their past sales. That will tell you much about the sellers reputation on e-bay.

P.S. Anyone have any (1972-73)stuff for sale? Could always use interior trim.
