1971 window regulator freeing up?
Hey all,
Since buying my car this summer (1971 911T) , the windows have not rolled down very easily. Especially the drivers side. They would roll down with a little patience and a little muscle. I read up on the window regulator and realized that eventually I would have to get that fixed or replaced. Well, I washed my car yesterday and made her look really pretty and then drove it to dinner. Wouldn't you know it, the windows both worked liked they were brand new. I was thrilled. It was like a new toy, and Christmas is a few weeks away. This morning, windows were back to being difficult. Go figure. How is it that water would temporarily free up the regulator?!?! Any ideas? Thanks fellas, -wb |

The windows on my '70 are also hard to operate, especially the driver's side. On your car, the water seems to have acted as a temporary lubricant, so if you get some real lubricant on the runners, it should solve it.
I think white lithium grease should do the trick. That's what I've been planning on using, I just haven't gotten to the job yet. Any better ideas out there?

I just replaced my window regulator and was advised by the shop that got me the unit to not use white lithium, but to use something more sticky. I used bearing grease, which seems to have worked fine, but it has only been a month or so.

My drivers window has been a problem for years. It cocks slightly in the channel when rolling down. It works fine going up. I have replaced all the channel felt and rubber and tried a bunch of lubricants - none seem to last more than a couple of days. I even had the regulator rebuilt at Stoddards - but they didn't replace the center pivot bolt. I noticed that the pivot bolt was worn, and I replaced it with a good one. If I get the regulator adjusted just right, it will work great - which is where the window is at now. I don't think I have completely solved the problem though - I think a regulator that is not worn will be the final answer.

i have had the same issue on my 73. i just installed another regulator as the spring was broke on the one in the car. i used bearing grease on the sliders on the window. i installed new felts in the frame so mine is very tight. after running it up and down a few times i lubricated the felt with some silicone spray i had in the cabinet and it seemed to get better. mine will get stuck about 3/4" from going all the way down. i have tried adjusting everything possible over and over as it doesnt seem to get any better. if you take your hand and press the glass down a little its flush with the wiper. it raises just fine so i didnt see any stops that needed adjustment to make it go further down. i purchased a used regulator from a 72 so i am sure its a little tired also.
