Paint Colors

Does anyone have a source for viewing paint colors from Porsche paint codes? I have some codes from 1978 MY that I would like to check out.

Chances are those old codes are no good now, since the automotive paints have been reformulated, and in 2007 many places won't sell you anything other than water based paints. That means starting over, and matching your factory paint with custom color.

I've had nothing but problems getting the right shade to match gulf blue. my bodyshop could not get a formula match. They then decided to have there paint supplier use the electronic eye to get a match off a little touch-up paint i had. Instead of getting my approval first they sprayed the car. when i saw it i knew the color was off - too light. i was so pissed that they painted the whole car inside and out with out having me approve the color i told them i wanted it stripped and re-painted. the paint supplier finally admitted the color did not match and re-mixed the color correctly. it looks like my car will finally be painted the right shade of gulf blue. so, basically use your eye and as much reference photos as you can to get a match, not the formula. i also ordered spray cans of many different colors from paint scratch to see what colors looked good - but those do not nessesarily match the original colors!

Matt,

I have found that you need to get your car painted by an old school guy who owns his own shop, takes pride in his work, and pretty much has his building paid off. Otherwise you'll be overcharged, and get the run around.

The guy who I take my car to for periodic touch up, repairs, etc is exactly this type of guy, plus he has the ability to match my paint (custom non-factory Silver Blue Metallic) exactly. You have to look at the car in natural sunlight. And like I suggested in a prior post, the old paint codes are not the way to match color.

That's good advice - i thought i was doing that but the body shell has been at the bodyshop 18 months and the owner partnered with another guy that is now handleing the business aspects. they are nice guys but they are rushing things that end up costing them more time and money. it always amazes me how most auto body business can be run so in-efficiently. there is no reason my car should have been there for more than 3 months. i guess the rule is there is 1. quality 2. time and 3. money - pick 2 of the 3.

It does not need to take a lot of time or money. Also insist on the best paints, such as Dupont.
