Targa top rebuild by Cars Inc *pics*
I've had this car since Feb. 06 and the Targa top has always been an issue. The PO had it recovered some years ago in a black denim type material that you see on convertible tops. It looked OK but that all changed the first time I went over 80 mph. The fabric caught the air stream at the leading edge and turned into a huge air scoop. It scared the crap out of me. The wind noise was incredible. Ever since then my car has been a fair weather machine.
At DE's I would have to "speed tape" the edges of the top to keep it down at speed. It looked awful and I got more than a few rolling eyes from the rest of the Porsche folks. Embarrassing to say the least. See the pic below at about 100 mph even the tape wouldn't stay down. That must have really helped my aero profile. After making a little profit on a car deal I finally bit the bullet and sent the top off to Dan at Cars Inc. in NJ. The top was completely rebuilt, broken and missing parts replaced and came back to me like new. He turned it in 2 days as promised for the flat rate fee you can see on his website CarsInc . I had the stage III rebuild done. The headliner is beautiful. The German Vinyl top looks great and it all fits very tight like I'm sure it did back in 1987. A couple of small wrinkles will surely flatten out once it sits in the sun for a while. I am in no way affiliated with them, just a happy customer. Here are some before and after pictures. ![]() After. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

You gotta be a wuss!!! What is the issue with a little wind coming under the top at speed? Dont you need some extra air when driving? Keeps the car cool in the wonderful Dallas summers??!!
Just kidding, I had the same thing on a Sundialent hard targa top I bought and it did the same thing, scared the you know what out of me when it had a gap of about 4" at highway speeds. Dan does very good work and glad to see another happy customer. Joe

As I have always said, he does great work. I bought a top from Dan, it looks just like yours.
The wrinkles will go away as you noted. Feels good to have a top that quite frankly is better than new, no? Be sure to use Mother's 'Back To Black' to darken just a touch and protect. ![]() |

Be sure to let the top cure in the sun for several days before any high speed driving. Otherwise, the glue will not cure properly and it will balloon back up. Especially in the dead of winter, it is difficult to get the top warm enough to cure the glue. I found this out the hard way last year after Dan rebuilt my top. Two days in the sun was not enough. He was kind enough to fix it for free.

I don't know how much guys are paying these days, but a couple of weeks ago I was on his website. It looks like the price has actually gone down since I had one done years ago.
Depending upon what the top needs, I think the price will run anywhere from $500-$1000. Just a WAG, but I'm guessing most will run $750-800. Back when I had mine done, I think the starting price was $800 and the total for me came out to $1200.

Did he repair your original top or did you send yours in as a core (and cash) for a different top? Hope that makes sense... |

He rebuilt my original top. It had a couple of distinct marks on the frame so I know it is my old top.
Well worth the money.

Well I let the car sit out in the sun all day and sure enough the wrinkles are going away. Now it is not that warm here (60 deg.) so the top didn't get as warm as I would have liked it to but I am very pleased with how it looks.
