Looking for suggestions to find clunking noise
 

I have had my 1987 911 Cab for three months and have replace plugs, wires, O2 sensor and other odds and ends.

But I have a clunking noise in the rear when I hit a big bump that sounds like suspension or exhaust hitting.
Last weekend I looked up under the car and cannot find any shiny points where the factory exhaust might be hitting.

Are there any tests that I can do to narrow down the noise to shocks, motor mounts, tranny mounts or other causes???

shocks bottoming out maybe?

Broken swaybar mount?

I second that. Id bet a venti skim latte that one of your sway bar mounts in the rear is broken. Its very common on the later 911s with the G50. Look at the sheet metal mounting flange on either side where the bars bushing actually is clamped to the chassis, they tear right off, then start bangin around like that. You can buy a new raw mount with a updated gusset from Porsche, unless pelican has them, and you need to grind off the old mount, and weld on the new one, sort of a pia job, but thats the only way.

Yep, probably the rear sway bar mount. That was the first thing I had to fix when I bought my G50 Carrera and it sounded just like you describe.

Probably swaybar mount but could be loose or broken shock. real easy to check swaybar mount, shocks not so easy unless just loose.

This may be a long shot but it may be a broken sway bar mount ;-)

I just welded mine back together 2 weeks ago.

It could be just the bar bouncing off the front trans mount platform that is straddles. I had such a noise and that was the culprit. YMMV

What happened ? Did you find out what the culprit was ?

check the gap between the body and where the shift connector goes through the body... when the trans mounts sag....this gap can get very small.. could be when you hit bumps this area has contact..this is on my G50...your tranny may not be a G50 or G55

Also, Make sure your sway bar is mounted right side up. Mine was mounted upside down and would hit the transmission case.

This may be a long shot, but maybe theres a midget with a hammer under there, try spraying a garden hose up under there and see if you can flush him out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll jack up the car and check the sway bar mounts this weekend.

If I see the gremlin with a hammer I'll see if he wants a beer.

You dont need to jack the car to check the sway bar mounts.
If I get a minute tomorrow, check this post and I will post a photo of the mount, so you can see where to check.
I believe the mount point is just fwd of the rear wheel...If you do a search, on "broken sway mount" I'm sure you'll find a photo before I can post one.

I have an 88 Carrera that had the same symptoms as you describe, and the problem was as stated in many of the previous posts........broken sway bar mount.

Not to worry, if youre a good DIY er and can weld, it's a pretty easy fix.

Do your homework first and search this board for posts on the subject, there are many.

Everyone was right on the mark. Broken passenger side rear sway bar mount.

I'll start searching threads for recommendations for a new mount.
