Upgrading to SSI's on a 74 w/ 83 Engine
I'm looking to get my dad a set of SSI's for Xmas. His car is 74 911 with an 83 engine. What do I need to know as far as ordering (parts)?
Thanks- Craig Backer |
I'm not sure when the switch was made from thin to thick flanges. I think that would be the most important thing to know, what is on his car. There is also a change in oil lines and a new muffler is necessary.

My '83 with stock engine has the LONG studs. So, the SSI needed for that engine (my '83's engine) is the one with thick flanges.
Also, the stock muffler does not mate up with SSI's. The stock exhaust system for an '83 includes a 1-in, 1-out muffler. With SSI's he will need a "2-in" muffler. |
yup long stud/thick flange for that engine. Your 74 probably has the 2 in muffler already if it was just an engine swap.. If not you will need to oil lines as well to reroute for the ssis

He will also have to do the Oil Line Update: It is important to note that all cars with cross-over exhaust systems (all 1978-89 911SC and Carrera) require the replacement of two oil lines with two older-style ones when installing the SSI heat exchangers (or any 1974 and earlier exhaust). These lines are part numbers 911-107-728-00-M20 (NO front-mounted cooler) OR 911-107-729-10-M20 (WITH front-mounted cooler) AND 911-107-739-10-M20.
The first is: Part #: 911-107-729-10-M20 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165500760.jpg The Second one if he has a front mounted oil cooler: Part #: 911-107-739-10-M20 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165500699.jpg The third one is needed only if he does not have a front mounted oil cooler. Part #: 911-107-728-00-M20 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165501062.jpg |
