Painting Fan Shroud

Im repainting my engines fan shroud on my RSR racecar.

Do I need to use a "high temp" paint?

The high temp red paint I have is not very glossy and I would prefer a gloss red finish. The regular enamel does not have any info relative to max temps or such its suited to on the can.

At first thought, it would seem a high temp paint would be required, but then again I am not sure how hot the fan shroud really gets. This engine will run headers and does not have the rubber insulation running around the engine bay keeping air out. Im thinking regular paint may be ok????

Whats the consensus ?

I like powder coating. The parts cure at 350 to 400F and should take the heat. The gloss is unbeatable.

I think he's asking about the shroud, which is usually plastic or fiberglass and cant be powder coated. There a bunch of threads if you search, but I think I remember some people having good success with the rattle cans specifically for plastics.

WHY DON'T YOU USE BRAKE CALIPER RED, THAT WAY YOU ARE SURE AND DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT POWDER COATING.

How do you ensure the alternator is grounded? Would the paint not act as an insulator?

The shroud is fiberglass. ITs not grounding anything, it serves to channel the air to the cylinder cooling fins from the fan.

Brake caliper paint... good idea!

You are correct on the fan shroud, I was thinking of the red painted fan (housing?) when I wrote that.

tfiv - If you prefer to keep the fan a natural mg, would you bead blast it and rattlecan it with a clear?, or some other finish/coating?
